Dual Core CPU is not worth it - Page 18

The amount of CPU usage background processes use has been vastly exaggerated. It's usually 3%, not 30%. So, shifting that onto a 2nd core isn't going to give you much benefit.

I agree, when my PC is sitting totally idle neither one of my cores goes above 5%

video drivers are dual core. Also, background apps are run better on dual core...

Listen...I didn't switch just for fun. My 3dmark score went way up (05) with just upgrading the CPU and overclocking to the same speed...

if its multithreaded (which it will need to be for dualcore) it will use all the cores you give it

that could be part of the balancing for whatever reason. it does the same thing with superpi or any single threaded application. both cores more or less mimic each other
so like when running superpi on my comptuer for instance it uses half the cpu power on one core and half the cpu of the other core. not sure what it does it that way but for some reason it does.

I'm not sure if anyone else noticed this, but I have definitely noticed that in certain benchmark software, if I set the program to specifically run on one of the cores only, I get better results--same was true for superpi (by one whole second! woo hoo). Okay, it's not that much of a difference, but I wonder if, while the program isn't multi-threaded (as many are not), it is still being executed over both cores, but the switching between cores/cache causes a bit of lag? Anyone noticed this? Anyway...

@guyladouche --> My Super PI time went from 29.968s on 1M to 29.375s... not a whole second but at least half a second

Yeah, sweet, ain't it. Now, if only things were multi-threaded, then all of our multi-core CPU's would be useful...

Glad I could help shave a half second off your time--every little bit counts!
