Updating the rules to what they should be is on the 'to do' list with the HWBot admins. Sometimes they don't have their priorities straight. But yeah, CPU-Z is needed.

Yup, I have separate SSDs for tests, and partitions for OSes (some benchmarks run better on different OSes, especially the 2D benchmarks.

I'm also fully aware that unless I switch to a more extreme cooling method (LN2, etc) I probably won't get past 5.2 GHz on my CPU. The things I'm afraid of most of all is killing my CPU by pushing too much volts through it (currently 4.7GHz stable at 1.384V) and killing my GPU with too much volts because it only has 4+1VRM. Still, I'm sure I can push both harder than where they are currently at.

Having to go sub-zero to get points is a myth. I'm currently 10th in the air/water league, 2nd in the OCN team for team contribution with 1200 pts, and all without a drop of LN2, DICE, or using a phase. I've never broken a bit of kit (some people will tell me I've not been pushing it hard enough). It's all about knowing the system your using, and applying a large dollop of common sense. Keeping an eye on temperatures, voltages, and cooling.

I used to run a Corsair H50 for my OC - that got me 5.3 GHz single thread, or 5.2 GHz multi thread on my 2600K at 1.58 V, hitting 95C (which is a bit too warm). I moved to a Corsair H100 with 4 deltas (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nQoXoEqGWAU), which did ok for temps (ambient counts for a lot, trust me), but I was at the limit of my chip anyway. For Sandy Bridge, air/water and good ambients is really all you need.

GPUs I've only ever run on air. Without hard mods / BIOS flashing, the only real way most people up voltage is with MSI afterburner. Even then, quite a few of my cards won't allow that (due to their voltage controllers), so all I have to play with are the MHz of the core/memory. They will go up and up until a) I think the temp is too high, which Afterburner records for me, or b) They don't have enough voltage, then the only thing to do is a hard mod (which I've not done to any of my cards yet).

A lot of people like to jump in at the deep end with cooling, perhaps killing a lot of kit, whereas I've taken a softly softly approach and come out quite well.

I suppose using laptops for benching is also a way to increase one's scores since they are less frequenntly used for said purposes?

Yup, I have several laptops worth in my profile - including my Dual Core AMD L310 in my netbook which couldn't really be overclocked. The CPU was rare enough to be in this model only, so I had few competitors, but the GPU in it was fairly common and I lost to those with beefier CPUs. Anything PC related can be benched.

no on the psu and no on the 32gb ram. Which bank did you rob. Psu prolly fine for stock clocks but not a whole lot more. i would go 1200w minimum and that should be good for air benching. Maybe a corsair 1000w would cut it. But if your gunna play it that close get a better brand with a good warranty just in case it dies.

1050W for two 7970s? I've been OCing a 3960X and two 580s on a Silverstone 1000W SilverPLUS PSU, no problems at all. Though yeah, I'd probably go with a brand name I trusted with a warranty.
Sigh, got a new motherboard only to find out that it's the CPU that's dead. frown.gif

Now I'm out of my SB-E bench rig, have an extra X79 motherboard, and cannot afford another CPU. Patch's 3960X in the sale thread is tempting though!
