lets see you solve this one

ok so....i recently grabbed a new hd to setup a dual boot. i am installing windows xp pro sp2, the same version on each hd. i format both drives install xp pro on its own partition on each drive, then i edited the boot.ini. everything is working fine for like a week then randomly i try to boot and i get the "hal.dll missing" thing. its weird because it worked fine for like a week then all the sudden decides to not work. anyway i try copying file from xp disc to drive but it wont detect the drive from the recovery prompt. so i try booting from xp disc, hit enter to install xp, hit r to recover and just reinstall windows files while leaving programs and such untouched and only one drive shows up, as if the other one does not even exist. i try to do a fresh install and at the screen where you choose drive and create partitions all it shows is the hd with the os that works fine. its as if the hd doesnt exist.

i guess what im wondering is, preferably, how can i fix this or how can i setup a dual boot with xp on both that will JUST WORK!!!

Why do you want to put XP on 2 hard drives in the first place? Theres no need to.

You know you can do that with one install of XP. Create different hardware profiles...

maybe the hdd died... if you can, pull the drive in question and ether put it into an enclosure or put it in a different pc and see if anything else can detect it...

I'd unplug your working HD and try loading up the XP start up disk on the one your having problems with. If you get to the install, partition it and format it and just create different hardware profiles. If you still don't see the drive then probably the HD blew up. Check the BIOs too to see if can see the HD.
