GFX cards with audio?

Thread Starter
I'm planning on building a media centre PC in the near future, and want to use HDMI to hook it up to an HD TV to minimise the hassle of video and audio cables etc. so I set about looking for graphics cards with HDMI ports.

I found one here:
http://www.engadget.com/2007/03/13/a...raphics-cards/

but I found the article a bit confusing:

Can a graphics card have audio? And what quality is it? The article doesn't mention this part, they seem more concerned with the card's gaming performance or lack thereof.

And if it does have audio, will the HDMI line carry it?

I would be grateful for any insight provided - I'm a bit of an AV noob

Ive been doing a bit of reading around this, as far as I can tell you need to link a cable between your soundcard/motherboard onboard sound to the graphics card.

You then attach a specific DVI adapter/dongle (provided) which gives you your HDMI out with Video and Audio.

EDIT: or in this case connect directly to the HDMI output on the card.

Cool ta,
just had a look on the second comments page and someone said

"I take the SPDIF out from my motherboard and plug it into the SPDIF input on the graphics card and it combines them in the HDMI out"

is that what you meant? So i guess I need a mobo with SPDIF out now then? That new fatality mATX board should do - oh wait that has HDMI anyway - problem solved!!!

Yeah that is what I meant

Ive looked at that board myself, looks very promicing. Not sure how efficient the onboard video and sound is (hence utilising the motherboard HDMI connection)

The newer 8600/8500 from NVidia and the lower 2000 series cards from ATI can support HDMI through a dongle (which is what I was hinting at in my first post)

That's what originally got me interested - I hate having cables for everything, SCART is wonderful and I think HDMI is even better.

The AMD alternative to that fatality board is the Abit AN-M2HD (which I can't find anywhere in the UK atm). Depends how cheap C2Ds are when I come to build it.

Anyway, thanks for your replies.
