just wht exactly is duo core??

Thread Starter
my laptop has a centrino duo processor. the desktops have the dual core processor. does my laptop really have two cores?

does that theory of 1st core 100% + 2nd core 60% = 160% performance apply for laptops?

some of my friends say no....

but i recently put the vista sidebar gadget called core usage. in this both cores seem to be working. hence it prooves duo core = dual core!

pros... plz help out!

What model number is the processor?

***EDIT

Nevermind, I'm blind in one eye and can't see out of the other.

Yes, the T2500 is a true dual core. 2x1MB L2 and 2 @ 2.0GHz cores

It is a Dual Core. Just like X2 Turion for AMDs.. It's an Dual Core, 2 Cores.

each "core" accounts for 50% of the total processing power.
so when core 1 is 100% and core 2 is 60% its actually running at 80% total.

Yeah.. they might not both run at 100% like an Desktop Core 2 Duo might do but you do get the benifit of multitasking.

I don't really think it's 80% total because that would mean it's running at the speed of one core at 80%. I'm sure it's 160% Maximum. 100% for one core and 60% for the second.

thanks guys... one big doubt gone!

oh ya.. and one more thing.. now there are some games that need 2 ghz to run..

and as per calculations, my comp has 3.2 ghz (100% of 2 + 60% of 2)

so will games of the future see this as a 3.2 ghz comp, or will they slow down and all?

When you play a game.. It runs off of one processor. But there are some games that know how to use dual-core to there advantage so the game will play more smoothly. If you have a Dual Core Processor running at 1.8Ghz (An E4300 for example) then each core is at 1.8Ghz. It's not 3.6Ghz in total.

However, if the game requires a 2.0 GHz Pentium 4 or equivalent, it might still work, as the Core Duo architecture is an improvement on the Pentium 4.

I mean, my puny little 1.66 GHz T2300E has few problems handling the games I throw at it.
Just not Gamecube emulation...

Suigi is right, most games are measuring GHz using Pentium 4's as a standard still. I'm not sure how good the centrino's are, is it a core2 that's just watered down?
