Made the plunge into Core 2 Duo Land!

Thread Starter
so i bought an e6420 to take a step into the c2d realms before going all out with some quad core monster or perynns. What should i expect from this cpu as far as an overclock?

I have yet to get or make a decision on ram and a motherboard so if you guys have any suggestions please let me know. I'm on somewhat of a budget since i dont want to spend a terrible amounts of money to get my feet wet but i dont want something that is crap either.

I figured something along the lines of a good DFI, ASUS, or EVGA board in the 100-200 range and probably the same amount for ram. I'll be running Vista and XP so 2gb's of ram is a MUST especially for dx10 gaming and Vista.

I'll probably be keeping my gpu, hdd's, and cpu cooler for this project. Any suggestions at all would be appreciated!

I'd expect to see 3.2-3.3 on the chip with good cooling.

Motherboard: Asus P5B-Deluxe - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131045

A very nice overclocking board on a low budget is the Gigabyte DS3:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813128042 $99.99 (RAID only on secondary controller)

One of the best boards on the market for Core 2 Duo is the Asus P5B Deluxe:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131045 $179.99

If you desire SLI, the Asus ASUS P5N32-E SLI Plus is worth a look:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131153 $186.99

Regarding RAM, I can be short:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231065 $134.99. Still one of the better overclocking kits, and the price is right

Thanks for all the suggestions! i see the gskill ram is highly praised so that pretty much sews that up! I've added everything to my wishlist though! so keep this great feedback coming!

Also these motherboards are they 8pin only or can a 4pin be used as well?

I would assume it's time for a psu upgrade anyways.

p5b-deluxe is definitely my choice if you don't need SLI. I like the gskillz RAM, though I always speak highly of my OCZ platinum, they're awesome! Great buy, tons of potential

I'll 2nd that.

The E6420 will easily brake 3.0ghz. Heck, a 3.20ghz it'd be great.

I dropped my OCZ Plats 6400s because I couldn't get 1000MHz at CAS4. They were great sticks though. I was able to get 960MHz at 5-5-5-15 and 2.2v.

I would have to agree that the skills are the way to go. How the heck are they only 119.99 now!?! Mine are still the same price but I'm kinda diggin these PC2-8500 sticks that have blue heat spreaders and black PCBs. I bet they would do 1000MHz at 4-4-4-12 also...
