Stack Cool 2, what is it? It's on some Asus boards, do you still need a cpu heatsink and fan? Cheers

"Finally, ASUS' "Stack Cool 2" is a method of cooling that I have yet to see on any other competitor's motherboard. What ASUS has done with Stack Cool 2 is covered the entire motherboard's PCB with an additional layer of metal which aids in dissipation of heat."

Taken from here.

Do you still need a CPU cooler? Most definitely, yes. Stack Cool 2 just basically allows the motherboard to expel built-up heat in its circuitry. It does not cool your CPU at all, however.

Hope this helps!

You always needs a CPU heatsink and fan. Its just cooling that asus puts on the MB to help keep it cool.

Nope.

The backplate is just part of the CPU cooler retention system. Stack Cool 2 is an entire "layer" of metal that is supposed to improve heat dissipation. Kind of like a motherboard-sized heatsink, in a way.

My A8N32-SLI Deluxe has it, as does every high-end Asus motherboard.

Does it work? Honestly, I don't know. I wouldn't even know how to test it. I DO know that the A8N32-SLI is the heaviest motherboard I've ever owned. If nothing else, it helps keep the board as rigid as possible (which, for me, removes any misgivings as far as mounting heavy CPU coolers on the board).

Hope this helps!

I know that's what I thought, but from the pictures I can't figure out where to fit a bracket to fit a heatsink and fan. I'll take your word for it though.

Edit:
Never mind, from txtmstrjoe's picture it's quite obvious where it goes... lol
