I think that below half way down is typical of almost every case, so you're bound to expect a bit of a reach if it's on the floor. There are a few things you can do. Hotter hard drives would not affect their life span, there was an article about this from google, in fact the colder ones gave out before the hotter ones.
Everything would be fine, although media drives might be difficult.
