512Mb isnt that good for L2 Cache - My Opty has 2mb.

The Semprons are OK but a little dated now

Yeah DDR is out, DDR2 is in

Well.... it all depends on what she plans to do with the laptop. If she justs checks her email and surf the web, then it'll be fine. Semprons are geared for the entry level budget conscious user. The Semprons do not have 512KB of L2 cache. Newegg has that listed incorrectly. Semprons usually have 128-256KB of L2 cache, which should be still enough for everday tasks. DDR2 RAM is the newer stuff and uses lower power so it should translate to a slightly longer battery life.

At that price, the laptop probably comes with integrated video and the 2GHz clock speed of the Sempron will probably not be able to keep up with your 3.4 Prescott in a lot of applications, but like I said, it should handle everyday tasks without a hitch.

Just came across this. Not sure how long you've had that laptop for, but this is actually not a bad deal. Dual core at less than $500 is really good. Plus, there is a rebate for it, making it even cheaper.

Is it really that important? I read somewhere (can't remember where, might have been Toms Hardware) that on AMD CPUs it doesn't have much of an impact.

They did various tests with gaming, image editing etc. and there was pretty much no diff. between 128kb Semprons and 256kb ones.

That's why I got a 2800+, same clock but £10 less (at the time)

The architecture used for sempy's don't require a lot of cache.

The core or core 2 models from intel need all the cache they can get.

Figure it like:

Now were's that screwdriver.
found it!
Next time i'll know where it is
