As you can see, performance can increase quite a bit with time, and in the older article Nvida said they had been developing 8800 for 5 years. Now its 6. It's exciting to see how much the R600 could improve, not that it's slacking.
As 650 comes out, It seems like it should be able to surpass the 8800 GTS fairly nicely, and maybe even become a competitor to the GTX. Even if not, if the performance should be between GTS and GTX, and so will the price, it should be a happy medium. I'm excited to see these benches- especially the folding ones.
See it about doubled... I could see that on a XT (Look at the specs it owns a gtx spec wize)

I'll let you know if it saves the clocks on reboot, but I doubt it. I know that ATI Tray Tools may save the clocks if you apply them with this tool. I have done this before with another app (Winclock, ATI's older in house tool)

As for the PSU, you may be able to get a mild OC with the adapters, but maybe not as much as the dedicated 8 pin PSUs. You defintely have enought juice to run them in Crossfire, so don't let the uber PSU trend fool you. It's retarded how powerful some of the PSU are coming out now. It's really just unneeded.
ok i got it all setup today and im only using two 6 pin pci-e plugs per card and i can over clock one card just fine in the amd gpu tool. using e6700 at 3.4 i hit 12k on 3dmark 06 but im stalling at 15.5k with the crossfire setup. everytime i set the clocks for both cards they show ok while on desktop, even if i reopen the amd gpu tool but as soon as i run anything in 3d the second card resets to stock settings. the the first one will still hold the clock settings i put in but number 2 gets reset. im just wondering if anyone has heard of this or its just me, this is after all not a clean install, im planing on reformatting tomorrow and doing a fresh one but i was so happy seeing 12k in 3dmark 06 i have to keep tinkering on this crossfire.

if anyone spots the correct 8 pin adapter for these cards please tell.

The only place I can find a mention of 8pin adapter is from Corsair but they are only selling them to their PSU customers so far. Apparently, you can only NOT overclock if you use ATI software. If you are using 3rd party software you can still overclock but if you exceed the power requirement they will revert.

interesting, i wonder if thats why when im over clocking in crossfire with amd glu clock tool if thats why one card keeps reverting to its stock speed when i enter into anything 3d. i have a 900 power supply, its enough. i know i have one whole rail though not being used ;all sata power connectors; i wonder if they make a sata to pci connector so i can use that entire rail for one card.

EDIT

i dont think its a power issue, i swapped rails from the cards to put the power rail from the number one card on the number two, since one was over clocking fine. same deal still, number 2 wont hold a clock, number one does just fine.

just to add so i dont need to start a new thread, can i get a general consensus on weather i should have AI turned on or off?

You should have Catalyst AI set to advanced. This allows the cards to utilize the AFR (Alternate Frame Rendering mode) instead of scissoring or super tiling mode.
I heard that you should set it to normal instead of advanced, and that this could cause graphical glitches. However, this is incorrect. My Crossfire performance didn't scale properly when playing Battlefield 2142. I was running 1920*1080, 2x AA and 2X High Quality AF (in game settings) and I was lagging at some points.
I enabled advanced AI and can now turn it up to Quality Adaptive 8X AA (redundant at my res, keep at 6X), 16X HQ AF, all maxed settings with ~50-75 FPS.

As far as your OC issue is concerned, I am able to keep both cards clocked in 3d mode and 2d. I check the clocks after playing for a while and they retain.
The clocks revert to BIOS settings upon reboot.

Lost planet DX10 has issues for me. It plays fine after fixing the dll errors (2 of them) but has graphical problems I have not seen when running any DX9 apps. It has pixelation problems and serious image quality issues. I hope its not specific to my hardware but a driver issue that will be fixed later but this is the only DX10 software I tried and it left me disappointed. Oh well, all I think can be fixed later with driver updates, the game does play smooth with high settings if you disregard the image quality issues. I am going to download the DX9 version and see how it looks. If anyone else has the same issues running similar or different hardware please post if you have come up with a fix.

i just did a reformat and fresh install but its still the same deal. when using amd gpu clock tool my number one card by default is showing 743 on the engine clock and 829 on the memory clock and i havnt even over clocked anything whatsoever. on the number two card in showing 506 for the engine clock and 513 on the memory clock and if i change it it just reverts when i check it after playing a game.

i know it isnt the card because i switched them around when i reformatted so now its doing the same thing on a different card and i know it isnt a power issue because i switched all the power inputs from the card that does over clock and the one that wont and theres still no difference. i wonder if this isnt some limitation with crossfire and 2900xtx in the amd gpu clock tool. are there any other programs out there that can overclocks the 2900 yet? im running on a 975 bad axe board so i doubt it can be a board issue. im stumped on this one.

UPDATE

i dont think its possible to overclock both cards in crossfire. i found this in the driver help info.

Note: Enabling ATI CrossFire™ for the selected graphics card automatically disables GPU Accelerated Physics for that same card.
