Silencing my hard drive

Thread Starter
Hi,

I'm going to be building a rig with 4 hard drives in it (raid 10), so I'm looking to cut down the noise of the drives.

It seems to me that 90% of the noise comes from the fact that the drive rattles against my case- the actual drive itself is not loud at all. I confirmed this by removing my current rig's hard drive and holding it in my hand while it was spinning. (I was careful )

I'm thinking of doing some kind of suspension mounting (See: http://www.silentpcreview.com/article8-page2.html). What do you guys think about this sort of thing? This article says it helped with the noise, but I'm wondering if it is safe- (a) because of higher temperatures due to heat not being conducted to the case, and (b) because the HDD might fall out of the suspension if you move the case around!!

If suspension is a bad idea, anyone know any good way to do it? I am using a NZXT Zero case... Also ideally I'm looking for a really cheap solution, like $10 or less for all four drives combined.

Thanks
-EJ

Just go down to Ace Hardware and get some little rubber grommets or washers. I'm cheap though

Rubber washers work just fine.

These work too: http://www.crazypc.com/products/5223.html

If you really want to spend money, you can get internal HD enclosures for each one.

Thanks! Cheap is good

Hmm, maybe i'm just stupid but errrr, what do you do with the washers?

The NZXT Zero has a system for mounting hard drives where you attach plastic rails to both sides of the hard drive, and then you slide the whole thing into the 3.5" drive bay. I don't really see where the washers come in since the only thing between the hard drive and the case is the plastic rail.

You could probably fix it just by tightening down the screws real right. Or you could go for the rubber washers but those kill heat transfer to the case. Either way make sure you get some nice airflow over a 4 drive array

Post a pic of your HD racks? The washers are suppose to sit between screw and case. Since you don't have the standard HD mounting in your case, we need to see what it looks like.

Really man, there is not much you can do to silence a harddrive other than spending $100 in a fancy enclosure.

Most things you see are gimicks,

Use some rubber grommets and just make sure the thing is secured.

Aww darn, that's too bad there isn't much I can do. I got kind of excited when I held the hard drive in my hand after taking it out of the case and listening to how quiet it was without all the vibrating. Oh well, at least I'll try the grommets, they sound pretty cheap anyway.

As for how my hard drive mounting works, here are a couple of pictures:

1. First you attach plastic rails to the side of the hard drive. They just kind of "snap on" by fitting a very small screw into holes in the HD:

http://img407.imageshack.us/my.php?image=hd1pu4.jpg

2. Then you slide the rails into the HD bay:

http://img47.imageshack.us/my.php?image=hd2sv5.jpg

Maybe it's dead obvious and I just don't get it, but I don't understand where you put the rubber washers

Thanks,
-EJ

Are those racks fitting snuggly or are they loosey goosey?
Could be the rails are loose and rattling.

Could be the rails are loose and rattling.
Get some electrical tape and add a few layers on the outside of the rails. This will make the HD + rails wider. They will then fit more snugly into the slots and will not be able to vibrate as much.
