Any benefit to upgrade from Intel 650 3.4 GHz to Pentium D950 3.4 GHz?

Hi guys,

Basically, i've got lots of help here from the beginning. So Overlcoking.net pplz help me built this system for my main purpose Photoshop and Video Editing roughly over a year ago.

Now the technology is Vista 64bits, and yes it does sound good, but i'm student and i don't want to invest another 4k on a system now hehe....

A fast computer rely on lots of stuffs, i know and i has been told... so i'm thinking, I"ve spent over 400bucks lastime (just a year ago) on a used P4 Serie 650 3.4Ghz Extreme Edition (DOES NOT SUPPORT 64bit OS, sucks!!), i'm sure don't want to do that again cause IntelCPU is quite cheap now for a DualProcessor...

Do you guys think, i'll double the power on the Penium Dual 950 3.4GHz, i'm seeing Dual as 2processor on one dice = 6.8Ghz, am i rite, well i did a little of math there....

So, for $150.00, does it worth it to upgrade to Pentium Dual Core 950 3.4GHz these day, and take advantage of 64bit soon Vista and CS3 ...(I know Core2Duo is out, and some day i'll get there, cause i don't want to upgrade bunch of stuffs, cause my motherboard is not supporting Core2Duo),

As far as Redering time such as on After Effect 7, Premiere Pro 2 RENDERING Video and Encore Transcoding DVD, would it cut down the time. Say normally Finalize a DVD on Encore 2 takes 02:30hrs on P4 650 3.4GHz, after upgrade to Pentium Dual Core 950 3.4Ghz, should it get the same job done in about an hour?

thanks guys

Pentiums Ds are basically two P4s under one hood. You'll need a good cooler and some power.

But it should be a nice upgrade from a P4.

I would still consider just getting a Core 2 Duo.

its better to go like this:
P4>C2D
than
P4>PD>C2D

I went from a P4 to a C2D , and i love it!

you can NOT just add the cores together and think its a 6.8 GHz CPU- most apps can only use one core at a time anyway

Pentium D 9xx series are ok. They overclock fairly well, but they are the same netburst architecture as the 6xx series.

Real world performance difference would be marginal unless you encode a lot.

thanks for all the comments,

with my current mobo, it does not take core2duo...

I left with two choices, P-D8xx and P-D9xx, earlier i learned most apps can only run on one core at once, meaning, if i were to run two applications parallel say, one is ripping dvd to divx and other one is finallizing a dvd, they each run at 3.4ghz real time?

if this is true, then wouldn't it be better than P-6xx 3.4ghz HT? i don't know if i understand this correctly, as discribe above, running two apps in parallel, they each only run at 1.7ghz with P-6xx compare to P-D9xx

My question is will i get things done in shorter amount of time with P-D9xx?

-as far as overclocking, i tried and i never get it run stable, i guess i'm not fully understand how tweaks thing around... i run them at stock speed.

The pentd would be worth it if you could get over 4ghz overclock but you would need good cooling for that. At 4500mhz im close to a stock e6600 in 3dmarks benchmarks havet compared encoding cause i dont encode alot.
