The Unofficial Trackmania Nations Thread

Thread Starter
Seeing as we've got a few TMN (Trackmania Nations) racers on the forum I thought I'd make a thread to contain all the info

What is Trackmania Nations?

To put it simply, Trackmania Nations is a racing game with a massive online community. Races are all in a "stadium" and tracks vary wildly - from small compact tracks with lots of braking to an amazingly fast track where you're gripping the edge of your seat.

From the website:

For the first time in the history of eSport, a video game has been specially developed for the Electronic Sports World Cup and is being offered free of charge to the players of the entire planet so they may commence training for the qualifiers due to take place in 53 countries on Friday 27th of January. The Grand Final of ESWC will be held in Paris from June 28th to July the 2nd , in front of 40,000 people, where the best players from each country will battle it out for a prize of 400,000 dollars.

This special version features a brand new environment, the Stadium, and a revolutionary new gameplay designed for Nadeo's own custom cars. Nadeo has pulled the technological rabbit from the hat with their own brand game engine, featuring the series' best graphics yet, finely tuned for the latest generation graphics cards, not forgetting simpler machines so that no one round the world has a technical freeze out on the race track. With the online in-game ladder, players can customise their cars and avatars and race in their nation's colours on the world's servers from Friday onwards. Many Trackmania and Trackmania Sunrise players will already have access to the following exclusive features: peer 2 peer data exchange and skin and avatar customisation.

The countdown to Trackmania Nations ESWC going online on Friday has commenced; in the meantime, we suggest you view the official trailer and we let the motors do the talking instead.
What makes it different from other racing games?

Theres a number of things

1. Its free! It was developed, as said by the quote above, to be free, which helps point two.

2. There is an amazing online community. There are several millions users and there are always hundreds of servers online from tens of different countries.

3. The tracks. I'll say more on these in the next section, but the fact that there is an easy to use Track Editor included in the game and a site (www.tm-exchange.com) simply for TMN tracks means you can play different tracks all day

The tracks

While the term "racing game" may bring to mind corners and straights, TMN is nothing like this.

Some unusual parts are:

Boosters - speed you up
Wallrides - you go around these at 90 degrees to the floor, sometimes going at the same level, sometimes up and sometimes down.
Loops - many sorts of loops, including ones you go at from the side and ones you go at straight on.
Push forward starts - these are where the track maker can show off. You hold forward at the beginning of the race and watch the car do a number of tricks. Not all tracks have them but some do
Jumps - line the car up (often at high speed) and hope to land on the other side!
Off road - the stadium has a grass floor and when driving on this the car will skid and slide.
Air-boosts - braking and speeding up in the air changes the speed of your car...

The two main types of track are:

Speed - loads of boosters, wallrides, loops, jumps and long turns
Technical - tight corners, loads of tilting pieces, may speed you up and then force you to slam on the breaks

OK, so I know what the game is. What is the aim of the game though?

The game comes with a large number of single player tracks made by Nadeo to get you into the game - depending on your time you'll be awarded a bronze, silver, gold or "better than author" medal (or none at all if your too slow).

However, the online section is where the game really becomes fun. There is an online ladder - you'll start off with a very high rank at the beginning, and your aim is to get your rank as low as possible. To get a better rank you need "points". You get points by beating people with better ranks than you in online races - points are worked out on these variables:

*The number of people with higher ranks than you that you beat
*How much better their rank is than yours
*How much faster you were than them

Controls

These are the default controls:

Up Arrow - Accelerate
Left Arrow - Left
Right Arrow - Right
Down Arrow - Brake
Talk - Space
Camera View 1 (default) - Num Pad 1
Camera View 2 (closer to car and lower down) - Num Pad 2
Camera View 3 (inside car, usually for loops, etc) - Num Pad 3
Overview of track - Num Pad 7
Navigation of Overview - Zoom in = Num Pad 8, Zoom out = Num Pad 5, Left = Num Pad 4, Right = Num Pad 6

Can I play TMN in Vista?

At the moment there is a problem with compatibility between Starforce 2 (which TMN uses in its install) and Microsoft's driver signing, however supposedly there is a way around this - could someone please check it...

1. Install TMN onto an XP installation
2. Boot Vista, navigate to the folder, and run the launcher

Alternatively:

1. Copy the TMN root dir onto the hard drive
2. Run the launcher from Vista

Alternatively:

1. Download the latest Starforce drivers: http://www.star-force.com/support/sfdrvup.zip
2. Download Microsoft .NET Framework Version 1.1 Redistributable Package
3. Turn off user account control.
4. Click on your old another OS (xp) Programme file TMN / TmNationsESCW.exe

If any Vista users could try these methods out to see if they work or if they don't that would be most helpful
More to come soon!

If you have any questions or want me to add anything (I'll think of stuff myself) just say.

An Overclock.net Trackmania Nations server?

Theres been two or three requests regarding this so I thought I'd put them into this thread so we can have just a single thread on it.

I'll throw my name on the list.

The game's good fun, and it looks great for a free game.

I'm not very good at it though.

I used to play TMN, there is software for a dedicated TMN server though.
