Overclocking Athlon XP 2500+

Thread Starter
Okay, so I have an Athlon XP 2500+, that I've been running stable at 3200+ speeds - 2.2GHz, 11x multi, 200MHz bus. I also have corsair XMS 3200C2 400MHz DDR Ram, running at timings 2.5-3-3-6 (stock).

If I try to overclock it any more than 200MHz FSB, it will boot fine but not pass OCCT torture test for even a minute. I loosened my RAM timings as far as 3-5-5-10 and upped the V-Core from stock 1.625 to 1.75. Still won't run the torture test okay. Keeps giving computational errors. I'm running this on an Asus A7N8X-E Deluxe. Anybody have an XP 2500 processor, or any suggestions?

Oh, and my idle temp is about 40C, load 48C

Most of the XP chips top out at around 2.2-2.4. If you unlock the mulitplier, it might do a little better. Temps are in line... I'd say you probably just don't have the best chip. Mobile chips are the best OC'ers, as they start out with a lower FSB and an unlocked multi, plus they run on lower voltages. Most people have been able to take their XP-M chips up to 2.5.

load at 48c is about max that i would do, i have had many poeple here tell me not to go over 50c.So i wouldnt OC.The AMD chips do make out at around 60 or 70c if you whant to burn up your rig.

Better cooling and a pin mod to unlock that multi and you should be able to hit 2.4 You'll need more vcore to do it though. People have pushed them over 2.0 vcore I think my 2400+ was at like 1.85 when I hit 2.5

On my old xp2600+ i could do 2400mhz-2500mhz and it was stable for a long time till i thk i had a surge in the house and fryed the cpu and motherboard.

Yeah, I've noticed these XP's can handle quite a bit of Vcore, crazy. Mines at 1.7, which is not too much above stock (I think it's 1.65... can't remember). Didn't need to crank the Vcore to get it stable because I'm just running it at 2.2 GHz (XP 3200+ speeds).

Most people with even a little OC knowledge at the time realized that the XP 2500+ was basically an XP 3200+ just clocked slower. A lot of people saved some bucks this way, lol.

I got my 2500+ a few weeks ago for $33 bucks off ebay, opposed to $150 that the Barton 3200+'s ARE CURRENTLY SELLING FOR on Ebay! If you think I'm making this up, go do a "completed sales" search on Ebay. Freakin' amazing.

What's really strange is, it turned out that the guy I bought the chip from actually lives across the street from my college. Small world, huh? So I went over there and he helped me out, and he was kind of responsible for me getting into the whole overclocking thing.

Well ive currently got my Barton Core up to 2.25 (see sig) thats a 205Mhz FSB. and yea, for some reason it wont go any higher, just resets whenever i start the thing up. I havent loosened the ram timings at all, so ill do that next and then see what happens. and i also have stock cooling.

I think that unless you do a pin mod, your going to be stuck at that speed

Well the pin mod just allows you to increase the multiplier if I'm not mistaken. This basically means you don't have to overclock your RAM to get higher frequencies.

But seriously, I think the problem I'm having isn't the Memory (Corsair XMS DDR400, 2-3-3-6 1T Stock). This ram has been known to overclock to at least 500MHz no problem. And I've even loosened my timings quite a bit, so I think it's the proc that's not running stable. Hmm...

I've been wanting to work on this more but I've been kinda busy lately and also working on my new rig. But later next week I should have a little more time to fiddle with my Athlon.

The reason I suggested the pinmod is that Socket A boards Fsb just doesnt go too high. Even the NF7-S v2.0 maxes out at 220-230 on average, and thats with having the ability to raise NB voltage. My 8RDA+ wouldn't post at 201 at all,but I could run 200 all day. I was gonna pinmod and vmod it,but then I got my AM2 rig and sold my 2400+. But I still want another one!
