two hd with xp on each dual boot

Thread Starter
ok so....i recently grabbed a new hd to setup a dual boot. i am installing windows xp pro sp2, the same version on each hd. i format both drives install xp pro on its own partition on each drive, then i edited the boot.ini. everything is working fine for like a week then randomly i try to boot and i get the "hal.dll missing" thing. its weird because it worked fine for like a week then all the sudden decides to not work. anyway i try copying file from xp disc to drive but it wont detect the drive from the recovery prompt. so i try booting from xp disc, hit enter to install xp, hit r to recover and just reinstall windows files while leaving programs and such untouched and only one drive shows up, as if the other one does not even exist. i try to do a fresh install and at the screen where you choose drive and create partitions all it shows is the hd with the os that works fine. its as if the hd doesnt exist.

i guess what im wondering is, preferably, how can i fix this or how can i setup a dual boot with xp on both that will JUST WORK!!!

someone recommended using hardrive profiles, but that doesnt work for the way im trying to set this up. also i rechecked my boot.ini and it is correct so i know that is not the problem.

You need something like GRUB, ACRONIS OS SELECTOR, or DARWIN BOOTLOADER.

I dunno HOW to install Darwin Bootloader, I just kinda have it because of my OS but it destroys Acronis for me.

You just select your hard-drive, tap on the F8 key til Darwin's selector shows up and choose an OS.

Google: Darwin Bootloader and good luck.

I am confused you installed XP on both drives?

EDIT: The easiest way is it go io the BIOS and change the bootdrive whenever you want to switch

why would i need a boot loader. changing the boot.ini lets you choose which os to boot from. i dont think thats the problem. and how is going into the bios easier. i have to boot.ini edited correctly. it prompts me at startup. it seems like theres some glitch that takes place when i reboot from diff os. any suggestions or walkthroughs on how to set this up from the begginning maybe. idk.

this is like the 3rd time i "just started over" ahhhhhhhhhhhhh lol. im setting up one os for movie making because my graphic card settings are drastically different, it requires a massive amount of space, the software used is very cpu intense and i want as little as possible on os for that reason. also configs and resolutions and refresh rates are all different. it is a big hassle to change everything from gaming to movie making being as i switch back and forth daily.
