Yea, he can just go buy a 4 port hub. It will cost him about 20 dollars.

He should get a switch, not a hub. They should be about the same price, but the switch is a much more advanced device. A hub just sends the signal out on all ports, but a switch sends the signal only to the port with the device attached to it

True, but if he only wan't to add one port, then a hub will be fine. There still wont be any collisions.

If you were running a multi user network then yea a switch would be required. When you have on more printer or even a couple more computers you will not tell the difference.

If they are the same price though, I would buy a switch.

well, the only OTHER solution, other than connecting it to the PC that is turned on THE LONGEST during the day and sharing it on the network, is placing it near the computer that is OFF the most and swapping cables between it and the printer. whoever uses that computer would have to be disciplined to plug it in whenever they are not online though..

Other choice? Visit your local newsgroups on GOOGLE.COM and look at who's selling modems, there should be a few and you can make another network on your internet network , or use one of the routers as a bridge so it wont have to give it an ip adress.

MOdem--->Router -----> computer
-----> computer
-----> computer
-----> router -----------> printer
----------->computer

question: How many of those computers NEED access to the printer?
