Sun CEO Warns Microsoft - Page 4

If the windows is better than the linux kernel then why do 75% of the worlds supercomputers use it?

And yes Microsoft Office is better than OOo. But I've used OOo for 2 years with only small issues.

You cannot forget that you comparing a complete OS vs. a kernel.

As for your OpenOffice document fiasco, you simply saved it in the
wrong .doc format. Word has like 10 (exaggeration) document
formats with each iteration. I hope realize that you
don't have to pay $300 for Word, when OpenOffice is perfectly
capable. I haven't run into anything that OpenOffice couldn't do
that Word could do (that I need to use). Hell I did my PowerPoint
in whatever OO calls it. If you use something thats outside
of OO's capabilities, then go ahead and use Word... Better yet
why don't you pop WINE onto a Linux box and use Word.

You complain that linux has few settings for files, well this simply leads
to the simplicity and removes user error (all files are read only until
marked as executable). If you can't figure out how to use GNOME,
then... well... someone hand this man the Darwin award.

I game on Windows because there is no support for Linux
(Ever since Loki went out of business I don't argue that)
I game on my 360 (yes M$), I love it.
I work in Linux (with the exception that at work they REQUIRE us
to use Visual Basic.... friggin morons, I even told them about RealBasic
and cross-platform for all those marketing dudes who like Mac. Do they
listen, noooo)

Final case in point: Linux is made by people... Not corporations.
That is key. I can command the destiny of my OS, and see what
has been put into it. Can you do that with windows. no. Is Windows
free. Psha, hell no.

So for me though:

I don't need to pay $300 for Word. (I don't know the price and don't care,
all I do know is that it's overpriced for an exaggerated WordPad).
Don't need Multi-user domain. Remote desktop: ehhhh, don't want it.
Web browser apps = Clunky & Useless (Have you found one worth using?
Me neither). GUI: gah-no-mmm.

Alright, here's a list of things Linux can do that Windows cannot:
A useful 3D desktop with effects that doesn't affect CPU load (beryl).
Doesn't need a virus scanner.
Legally free.
You can customize absolutely EVERYTHING in the OS.
Be without the security holes in Internet Explorer.
No spyware.
Install virtually any software you need from one location, without risk, and without cash.

Do I really have to continue?

I apologize if I come across as a fanboy, I do not mean to be. I detest everything fanboys are (ignorant, stupid, mindlessly repeating the line "My product is amazing, yours sucks!). I also hope you do not think that I dislike Linux! I do not! However, it is clearly not a "better" operating system then Windows. If it was, we would all be using it and not Windows! The reason I keep posting is because of those of you who seem to think that Windows is horrible and that Linux is amazing for all things. That is simply not the case.

As for OpenOffice vs. MS Office, the reason that there are compatibility issues is because MS Office uses parts of the Windows kernel to run. When you run software on another operating system, those parts are going to be different. Even sharing files between Word for the Mac and Word for the PC has problems! I think most of you simply do not realize what you can do with Windows if you want to.

Let me finish by saying again that I do not have any problems with Linux, I just have a problem with many of its users

1. Define "Useful". I define useful as something that helps me use my computer (such as Expose on a Mac). I have yet to find Beryl useful.

2. Yes, you can. You can also customize everything anyone would want to customize in Windows, you just dont know how (yes, you can customize more in Linux, but now we get to the point "why would you"?) (also, you can customize much more in Windows that I think you know )

3. What security holes in Internet Explorer are we talking about here? The ones for IE5? Find me one that IE7 has

4. The software you can get for Linux is (almost) never as good as what you can get for Windows. You get what you pay for, plain and simple. Also, you can get lots of free software for Windows as well, just as much as for Linux! And you can get it from one location, without risk and without cash: www.download.com

hmmm...windows is so widely used because of marketing, NOT because of user friendliness or ease of apps

Lets put this in real terms...if you dont have a M$ app that you need, then you look for it online....but if it doesnt work with your app then you get a BSOD or major problems

now yer screwed, you MUST use M$ to fix your problems

now you apply ANOTHER M$ fix/patch/security update, what is next?

There's things I can't do in Linux, and I don't claim to be able to. Windows has one big advantage over Linux; user friendliness. Most people would have no idea how to go about partitioning a hard drive, even when it walks you through it. Windows isn't a BAD operating system, I just think it's entirely too bug-ridden for the price.

And as far as you saying Linux isn't a better operating system, I do have to disagree. Linux is much more stable, and much more customizable. I can't say Windows is better just because most hardware/software companies refuse to support it, that's not the OS' fault. Luckily, genius coders out there have reverse-engineered drivers for most hardware that the company refused to release hardware details on, and WINE is a great compatibility layer for running most Windows programs.

If Linux made it to the mainstream, and people learned to use it, Microsoft would definately panic.

EDIT to SoaDMTGguy:
1. Move your mouse cursor to the top right of the screen, and you get live previews of all windows that are open. The visual effects are mostly eye-candy, but this feature is extremely useful to me.

2. I know you can replace explorer.exe with other shells, I know you can get visual themes with an unofficial patch, I know. But can you make Windows seem like a COMPLETELY new OS?

3. http://kinghavoc.tblog.com/post/1969946893

4. "The software you can get for Linux is (almost) never as good as what you can get for Windows." Examples?

And the reason Microsoft Word isn't 100% compatible with Open Office, is because the file format a proprietary BINARY file, which is another security risk.

i had to take a Linux course in college (i just graduated woot!) and i found Linux, while a stable OS, with many of the great features of Windows (coded from the ground up, of course, not "stolen" from MS), is VERY hard to figure out and use unless you completely divorce yourself from Windows for a while and just go all brute force on figuring it out.

that being said, i'd rather have a Unix based server than an MS one. but for my desktops? Windows all the way.
