Well, for a program that properly utilizes all the cores, then the performance is multiplied by the number of cores for the most part (Example: superPI).

Of course, if a program only uses one core, then you can have a million cores and you'd have the same performance as one.
but it isn't multiplyed by the factor that you said

I agree, it definately doesn;t have to do with multiplying the frequency times the number of cores. Dual-core is a safe bet to go with rigt now but honestly, are you going to upgrade again in the next 3-5 months? I'm building a rig this summer and I don't plan to upgrade it for another 1-2 years after. We have already been offically told that games like crysis, which are coming Q3 of this year are going to be multi-threaded and if the coding is good this is going to prove to show HUGE performance gains by splitting the weight over four cores.

This is going to be a trend that will follow from then-on and current games are even getting patches to support multi-threading. You will be fine for now with a dual-core and by that I mean for about three or four months. Obviously, it would be smarter to go for the native quad-cores coming ina year or so but if you are planning to build this summer, wait for July 22nd and get yourself a Q6600 for $266.

the x6800 sucks at overclocking.

A e6300 can go to 3.2 and a e6600 3.6. Same thing but WAY WAY cheaper

Why so if you can get a Q6600 and clock it to the same speeds easily? I mean this is overclock.net... I would only get a QX6800 if I would leave it at stock speed. Just my thoughts on this

Is this correct... a dual core 3ghz can only process 2 things at three ghz each, where a quad core 1 ghz (just for the sake of numbers and getting my point across) processes 4 things at once, even though the process speed is lower, it is still getting more work done.

only if the program uses all 4 cores.

Theoretically that would be true but it is never fully true
