When do you think the 8800's price will drop?

I bet the price will drop by 50% within a few months, when they come out with the 8900 or something.
I don't think they will be coming out with the 8900's until Q3, September or October.

yeah, they really have no reason to drop prices... people are buying them, and they have no competition

OK, stop. The 2900XT is competition. It's cheaper than the 8800GTX and benchmarks comparatively. Yes, it's hotter. Yes, it takes more power. But don't make it sound like nVidia has no competition at all, because they do. In the budget DX10 market, where they'll make 80% of their money, they are unchallenged. In the enthusiast market, they have competition from ATI, even if you fanboys don't seem to think so. They have gone unchallenged thus far for DX10, but DX10 isn't even used for anything yet, so why would the average user bother?

My guess is that they will drop prices when Crysis comes out, so they can hook more people into buying their hardware since something will actually utilize it.

I think in the enthusiast market, ATI and Nvidia don't really have as much competition as you think. Since most makers have graphics cards priced similiarly in relation to performance, many users already have a chosen brand. For me, I only buy Nvidia cards, and I know a lot of people who will only buy Nvidia cards or ATI cards.

Mainstream is where the real competition's at, since someone who's buying a dell is less likely to have a preferance of nvidia or ati.

And it's not like the 2900XT is cheap, it's still a > $400 card.

If you're expecting something close to a 50% reduction in price, you'd most likely have to wait until it becomes superceded by newer hardware. And if history has shown anything, the 8800's will drop in price once the HD2900's fall as well.

Personally, I haven't spent more than $200 on ANY video card upgrade. This includes my 9800 Pro 128MB, X1800XT 256MB, and my current X1950XT 256MB (with this one being the fastest AND cheapest ). I'm confident that when the top end of both companies costs around $200, you should still have excellent performance as long as you don't mind that they will be last gen hardware.
