Possible Limitation?

I've been trying to get my cpu clocked around 2.8ghz. Its been getting really unstable soon after 2.6. I increase my volts, loosen my timings and my FSB isn't even near the 300 range yet. HT Multi dropped to 4x and CPU multi is at 10x.
Ram running at 400mhz to get a 1:1 ratio (kinda sucks).

Now, I feel fairly confident in what I am doing now but I've started wondering if perhaps the fact that my CPU actually came out of an HP computer would that be a factor limiting my OC?

I don't completely understand it, but i've had it completely stable at low temps @2.8 before using nTune (yes, yes I know it sucks but I didnt know at the time). That auto OC from nTune was very stable and cool. Now it wont go over 2.6 whether I do it in the BIOS or try nTune again.

For now i'm only using the standard 10% AI overclock option in my asus bios, until I can figure something out. Anyway, is my factory HP CPU proving to be the roadblock itself?

What stepping do you have? (It is on the actually CPU) How about temperature?

2.6GHz may just be the limit of the processor. This is not all that unusual. Don't use that Asus overclocking tool. Do it manually and test it right with Orthos.

At a stable 2.6 my temp never went over 45 in 8 hours of Orthos, as for the stepping I belive its 2....

I fail to believe that 2.6 is the limit because (as much as it sucks to use) nTune provided a stable 2.8 OC once before, but is failing to recreate it. Was mainly curious if the fact that my CPU originally came in my old HP computer, was the source of the problem.

The cpu is an AMD, not an HP. The motherboard is what is currently limiting you. The bios options require optimizing.
Try dropping the HT to 3x and raising the fsb a bit for added stability. Notch up the voltage a notch on the vdimm, vcore and chipset (if available).

Wow that actually makes sense, because I achieved 2.8 with my HP mobo (with nTune) before I upgraded to this one. I dont have the option to up my chipset voltage but I had my vcore at 1.4 when it was running @2.6 stable. My vdimm only goes to 1.95 sadly

So I can probably conclude that my Mobo is limiting me to 2.6, but will not make that an official fact until I try dropping my HT multi to 3.

Thanks, to both of you

EDIT:

@Duckieho - I use the manual OC utilities, only have the ASUS Ai stuff going because its an easy/fast 2442mhz without having to constantly reboot lol. Manual kicks in tonight when I get off work

yeah it most likely is the mobo - I cant go over 2.4ghz with my crappy ECS thing even though the processor itself was happy up to 2.7ghz. The processor was running Orthos no problem, but I was getting random restarts as the mobo couldnt handle the high FSB

My 4200 topped out at 2.65 no matter how many volts I put through it. 2.6 to 2.7 seems like a pretty common wall for that chip.
