AMD Barcelona launch schedule up in the air

Shawn Chen, Taipei; Esther Lam, DIGITIMES [Wednesday 16 May 2007]

AMD's original plans to introduce Quad-Core Opteron (Barcelona) CPUs are unlikely to be on schedule with a concrete launch-time still unknown, according to sources at Taiwan server makers.

The sources noted that AMD has informed them that the introduction of Barcelona will be delayed until August or September, instead of the originally planned June. However, the sources also noted that this schedule is still subject to change. The Barcelona CPU samples they have currently are not the final versions and bugs are still being discovered, they added.

Some Taiwan-based server vendors commented that their confidence over AMD will be affected by the delay. Roadmaps for new product launches were mapped out by the vendors in 2006, and the delay of Barcelona will interrupt these schedule. Comments gathered from vendors show that the majority believe a critical impact will be seen amid Barcelona's delay.

Besides that the postponement may discourage confidence among server makers, AMD also has to face the potential threat from rival Intel whose 45nm-made Harpertown and Wolfdale-DP CPUs are still on schedule to be both launched as planned, according to sources.
First the ATI card now this. It wouldnt even surprise me if they haven't launched them after september... http://www.digitimes.com/systems/a20070516PD217.html

I'm finally forced to admit it.... AMD is in a gigantic world of hurt. I always admitted that after C2D they were hurting, but not on this scale. They've released... what? An optical shrink of the K9's to combat C2D.... C2Q...C2D E4300.... C2D E6X20.... soon to be C2Q2(core2quad2... wolfdale and whatnot 45nm) AND C2D E6X50?

AMD... you're F%^&ED! "It's not a true quad!" Won't do dick against that WALL of product that's not just beating you to market... but totally F%^&ING BEATING YOUR ASS TO MARKET WHILE YOU TOODLE AROUND TAKING YOUR TIME ON THE ONE PRODUCT YOU'VE GOT COMING DOWN THE PIPELINE. We're tired of hype... we listened and patiently waiting for your R600 AMD, and you delivered (kind of)... OVER HALF A YEAR LATE! Nice, AMD, real nice, I'll give you a clap on the back for producing a one of a kind product as there is nothing else that can run HDMI like that and has an onboard sound card and tesselator stuff. IT'S STILL OVER HALF A YEAR TOO LATE! Why? As if your credibility wasn't damaged enough by delay after delay after delay, you then deliver a product that's decidedly NOT 'HOLY ****-MAZING' to inspire sales. I think you're going to see a bad backlash AMD... really bad... now is NOT the time for bad backlashes either. You told us sweet sounding things with R600 and RD600 (yeah unfair as they weren't them) and we got barely passable products out of those... why believe you now about barcelona? It's following the same BS trends...

AMD says sweet sounding stuff about upcoming product-> delay->another sweet sounding pacifier->delay->delay->delay-> release a product that would have been highly competitive... 6 months ago. Thanks, AMD, but no thanks. Q6600 for $220 for me... to hell with Barcelona.

/pent-up-AMD-rage-from-an-AMD-lover-who-wants-to-go-back-but-can't-because-AMD-decided-
that-new-product-was-not-their-top-priority-for-three-long-years-at-the-top-productwise-and-
didn't-learn-a-damn-thing-from-who-they-topped-to-get-there

Asset light my ass.... well maybe it's more fitting than it sounds.

asset light->Ass-et-light->ass and light->ass end light ...as in LIGHT A EFFING FIRE UNDER YOUR FAT ASSES AMD AND PUT OUT SOME PRODUCT!

AMD officials are also noted for saying things like "our gross margins will improve in Q1" on Dec 15, 2006. We all know how that turned out.

Henri Richard, in mid-April, claimed that the R6xx video card family would ALL launch in May-- "we don't do soft launches". We all know how that turned out.

In short, AMD officials don't exactly have much credibility these days

I am an admitted AMD fan, I don't have a preference for gpu's. I bought the 1950pro because it was $140 open box from newegg and had free shipping, and was an awesome card. The three I had before that were Nvidia.

It is really getting to the point though that I am going to buy a C2D/8800 system just out of pure spite.

I must however give credit to my 3600+ which is running 2.6 undervolted on a passive cooler. That is just plain impressive.

haha, saw this coming though as most have you probably have seen in my "I for see another ATI" responses to other threads. Also something to think about is: while barcelona *may* be good vs the core 2 line, what happens when they delay 6 months again will be the same thing as G80 vs R600. Do I believe barcelona is 50% better than a kentsfield in any case? no. Funny how they don't have any benches on it yet I hope for the best either way, I am loving these Intel price drops and at this rate I will be able to afford wolfdale.

As much as I like to support the 'mom & pop' shops over 'wal-mart', if the Agena's aren't out by the time Half-Life 2: Episode 2 is out, I'm just going to go with a cheap Q6600.
