Pentium D crazy high temps?!?

Hi everyone,

I'm new to OCing (since I got rid of my Dell, woohoo!!). This site seems to have some excellent info.

I have not really started to overclock my machine at all yet because of my concern for the CPU temp. Now I know Pentium D's run hot, but at stock speeds, running Orthos for 5-6 minutes the temp was at 65-66 degrees! I'm using a Zalman CNPS9700 cooler with AS5 applied as per the instructions on the AS website. I have adequate case cooling, 2x80mm intake, 1x80mm and 1x120mm exhaust, my case temps hover around 37 degrees (the fans are turned down a little because of noise).

I'd like to get a little more speed out of my processor, but I'm weary about raising my VCore voltage because of the additional heat it might create. Can anyone confirm that these temps are somewhat normal, or any advice to lower the temps a bit? I guess any little bit helps.

Thanks...

Something is very wrong imo. I only have a 9500Zalman on mine, and with this slight overclock, my load temps are only 44c.

Check the HS and re-seat it (it might not be flat against the surface). Then again, I don't know what speed you are running your overclock, but unless you are running about 4.4ghz on your clock, I would have to argue those temps

Thanks for the quick reply Edstrung...

That's the thing, I'm not OCing yet! My FSB speed is stock 200mhz, and I haven't adjusted anything else yet because I'm worried about the temp. I guess I'll try this weekend to re-seat the heatsink and see if that helps. I'm pretty sure I did it correctly, but this was my first build that I needed to apply thermal grease, so I'm not sure if I did that correctly, but I did follow the instructions on the AS webpage...

I'm not in front of the box right now, but I think I saw it running yesterday night at about 2250 - 2280rpm, but I'll confirm that when I get home. Also, I'm not using the 'Fan Mate 2' that came with it, it's just plugged straight into the mobo.

Actually, I just thought of another question I have: in Speedfan, I have the CPU temp, and also something called AUX, I'm not sure which sensor this is finding, but the temp on that is at about 122 degrees. If someone can tell me what this is, I would appreciate it.

Thanks again everyone...

If its the same as my 9500, unless you use the fanmate provided, it runs at a constant 2400rpm, there isn't a fan control bit to be controlled by mobo/software, which again means it should be running cool.

In reply to you not OverClocking yet, I'd put money on a bet between faulty sensor/software or the HS isn't seated well.

I am using bog standard thermal paste, and got massice reductions over the stock hs/fan. If I were to use AS5, I would expect another 3/4c drop in core temps.

Download Everest Ultimate to monitor temps, and reseat the Zalman and a fresh application of AS5. This 'should' reduce the chances on being incorrectly seated and then we can look toward faulty temp sensors.

Once we have this figured, we are then going to get that P4d to 4.5ghz before you hit that temperature again

EDIT - I forget my manners, welcome to OCN

Hm, that I didn't know, but I guess there's really no point in connecting it, is there? It seems to be slightly below 2400rpm, maybe just for the hell of it, I'll plug it in and leave it at the max setting.

Ok, downloading Everest as we speak, and I will reseat the Zalman this weekend when I have some time. Do you have a good guide or some advice on how/how much AS to apply? That's the only part that I'm not sure I did correctly...

Click Here and make sure the line in THIN, before you put the HS on

Too much paste can be bad, quite bad

Im just starting to figure out how to clock this cpu and others for the future, and I have seen plenty of 945s going to 4.5/4.6 without water cooling, so being a 940 it won't be far off

You may have poor air circulation, "IF" you have a mid-tower? That could be a little bit of a problem.

See, I used to have a mid-tower and a Tuniq Tower 120 but the temps in my Pentium D processor went considerably down when I switched from mid to full tower and finally had much more air circulating in the system, and at 4.51ghz the full load of my CPU is only 44c, whereas before was 55c.

BTW, 80 and 90mm fans are just pointless, the air they move for the noise they make? Not worth it at all, that's why I buy cases that have intake and exhaust 120mm fans.

Try to reseat and reapply also check the base of the sink mine is concave and just havent gotten to lapping it yet. my temps are over 60c when im running 3.0 ghz and 1.40 vcore under load for about 10 mins my room is also 78 f most of the time! When it gets cool i can get it down to 56c at 3.12 ghz and 1.40 vcore. good luck try to reapply the AS5 it should help and if its not flat well theres plenty of threads to teach you how to lap if you dont know how im learning now on a stock intel sink! case airflow is also very important.
