Replacing IHS

Thread Starter
ok so a while back I whacked off the IHS to the proc. in my sig. but it didn't really help my temps any and now I'm thinking about lapping it and putting it back on since my new cooler (Thermalright 120) doesn't really fit without the IHS. so my question is can it be put back on and how do I attach it?

virus your a noob and a dunce lol
put a dab of thermal paste on the die, then around the edge of the IHS put some silicon adhesive on and press the IHS on keep presure on till the adhesive has stuck thenleave it for another 24 hours before you use to make sure it has set. make sure the adhesive is safe to use on eletrical circuts
post #4 of 9
Try Arctic Alumina Adhesive. Once used, you will NEVER be able to remove the IHS again....

Dont know why you would want to re attach it since temps will only go up not down, you may be able to re mount it in a crude way but since you cut the epoxy between the cpu and the ihs it will be hard for it to stay in place while mounting the heatsink on the ihs and it not moving on the cpu core.

I dont know the mounting procedure for the heatsink but if it relys on the stock mouning bracket around the cpu just shave the edges off where the heatsink is contacting so that it sits flush with the core.

I don't think the heatsink is actually touching the mount but I think the bracket will only get tight enough for it if it had the ihs on it, I was thinking about using the ihs as a spacer between the top of the HS and the mount .. theoretically it would be the same width as if the IHS was under the HS .. see crude picture below

Not a bad plan! It might work! Are you sure the plastic bracket that surrounds the socket is not in the way?

***EDIT

On second thought, looking through their installation pics, the IHS should not make a difference if the bracket surrounding the socket has been removed.

I don't have the big bulky factory mobo bracket just the part that the CPU sits in the others has been replace with a metal peace from ThermalRight.
