Cooling the 8800GTX

Thread Starter
Hey guys, just thought id let you know how i managed to get my Inno3d 8800GTX down from 76°C idle to 52°C idle with stock cooling

Basicly the idea is to get all the hot air its pumping out, away from the intake, as it is, there are loads of gaps around the heat sink, especially near the exhaust of the thing, i took some electrical tape, and covered all the gaps, my idea was that this means the hot air wouldn't go back into my case, and would actualy go out the exhaust like its ment to.

The other thing i did was to do with those stupid holes in the underside of the heat sinks cover, no idea why they are there :/ but thats just pumping hot air back into my case right near the 8800's intake ! so all i did was take out the backing plate to the pci slot below my 8800, this new 'hole' is directly where those holes in the heat sink's case are, so i took a fan (the stock fan from my 4600+) and ran the cable into the case and connected it to my Mobo, this size fan is exactly the right size to just sit nicely over both the 8800's exhaust (for extra heat removal) and over the lower pci slot, this removes the hor air from the bottom of my 8800 and as i said before, got me from 76°C idle to 52°C idle, and load from 88°C to 63°C.

Well, hope someone else will try this and see if it works for them too

-Dan

Edit: Forgot to say the 4600+'s fan is sucking air from the back of the 8800, and also all those temps are with my 8800 at 630 - 1980

Basically how you are setting up your fan, is it pointing downwards or out of the case? a couple pics would clear it up

If you are willing to spend a few bucks ($55 right now at Newegg) the HR-03 Plus has some excellent reviews - It's made specifically for the 8800GTX, complete with little Ramsinks. Most people seem to be getting load temps of about 50C, sometimes below.

Some reviews:

Here, (and the graph from this review.)

Another review, (linked to the page with the temp chart - scroll down.)

Also, Newegg customers have been getting similar results, according to their reviews.
