A Report Card for the ATI Radeon 2000 Series

The strategy to come in second with a great price point might look good on paper, and it'll probably sell a lot of midrange and low-end cards to people who don't really do much gaming. Money being the bottom line of every profitable business, AMD probably did a terrific job for its investors

But from a hardcore geek's perspective, AMD's latest is just kind of, to borrow an Internet message board cliché, "meh."
.
I find that intresting!

Poor AMD and ATI, getting bashed...

I'm not sure they can be excused, but I guess for two companies that have just merged together and are getting "crushed" by Intel, they certainly should have no room for mistake...

Well... honestly, the 2900XT should have been better than it is right now, since ATI has had 8 months to work on it over nVidia's GTS (XT's main competition). However, we have yet to see the actual FLAGSHIP XTX. I think 1GB GDDR4 and 65nm process type will really ramp up the performance over the XT, GTX, and GTS. Unfortunately, ATI is WAYYYYY too late with the XTX to even be competitive... Nvidia WILL have a response to the XTX ready and waiting for launch day that will crush ATI's hopes of the XTX.

I personally think AMD should abandon the R650 and move on to R700. This war is over, the current "generation" is already 8 months old and with only 5 or 6 more to go until the next-gen, ATI doesn't have a lot of time to just bump along. I would be willing to bet hundreds that Nvidia will have it's 9-series (or whatever) ready to go by Q1'08 with an 8-series refresh in the next few months, and at this rate, ATI won't be able to keep up with that and will have another LATE release

But something most enthusiasts forget about is that profit is not really made on flagship cards. Instead, most money is made on the low range-mid range cards.

I guess that the hardcore gamers are the smallest slice of the market. I predict a better future for ATi's mid range segment

ATI has stated that there will be NO HD2900XTX. the HD2900XT is basically the top of the line. So the 8800Ultra/8800GTX remain at the top for gfx cards, which translate into no price cuts for the GTX... Guess i will have to wait for SLI...

even so, 80% of the market are noobs...so they will hear that (because top of line nvidia card is better than top of line ati card) that nvidia is kicking amd's a** in hte performance crown, they will think that ALL nvidia is better and buy only nvidia...whether the nvidia cards they buy are good or not...lol

my friend bought a 7600gs for $199.99 from bestbuy.

i told him that you could get an 8600gts or a 7950gt and he almost cried. and bestbuy has a 25% restocking fee LOL.

you can get past that 25% restocking fee. Just say the card was not compatible with your pc and u will not have to pay fee. I use to work in BB computer department and we hardly ever charged anyone that fee.

Really? When? I thought the R650 was planned out for release in August/September?!?

Darn... I at least wanted to SEE how a card with *less* gate leakage and higher clock and more mem would do against the GTX
