Need Windows XP help

Thread Starter
hey, I have Windows XP home edition and everything has been working perfectly until the last couple months. My Crucial RAM (20th anniversary edition) died awhile back (the ram I used when I first installed XP). So I got new RAM and then I had to call microsoft to request a new key or something, i forget what it was but I had to do it since it didn't recognize the RAM since it was a different kind (I have the Ballistix). And ever since I have switched I get a quick little message about "windows could not boot from c:/windows/system/boot.ini" or something similar when I boot. it only comes up for one second then everything boots fine.

NOW, however, if I leave my computer on for about half a day or more when I come back I have some big error about C:/windows/system32/system or something similar having some sort of corruption. If I shut it down and restart everything boots up normal and then a window comes up that says "The system has recovered from a serious error"

BCCode : 1000000a BCP1 : 08C8E710 BCP2 : 00000002 BCP3 : 00000000
BCP4 : 8051673A OSVer : 5_1_2600 SP : 2_0 Product : 768_1

Anyone have any ideas what to do besides reformat? Also, are there any free programs that fix these sort of errors.

I apologize for not being super specific on the errors, if it happens again ill write it all down exactly.

Try running chkdsk on it before doing anything drastic.
(Open My Computer, right-click the Hard Drive, click Properties. Click Tools. Click "Check Now". Place checks in both boxes, click Start. If it asks you to restart, click OK and restart.)

See how it does after that.

Unless of course it happens to be the 7th item replaced or some other strange event where it has to be reactivated... I've seen weirder things...

that is odd...I have had about 30 diff memory set ups in this puter alone and it never asked.

The corruption seems like it might be a memory error

waiting to see your results from the chkdisk

all I remember is the RAM crashing, then getting new RAM from crucial (not the same kind tho!) and then some message saying my hardware config is diff, please reactivate or something lame like that. I just called and told them my situation and they gave it to me immediately like it was nothing new to them, so i assume it happens often.

I just don't understand the random restarts I've been getting. I ran dskchk but I left to go do something, then when I came back the computer had restarted so I didn't see any information about bad sectors or anything. I may just run it again...

It's sounds to me like your file system has been corrupted by unstable RAM. Download a demo of Perfect Disk 8 and analyze your HDD. If some of your HDD is showing as metadata, then it has been corrupted. This happened to me with bad RAM, and a clean install of XP will fix this completely.

chkdsk will not fix corrupted file systems due to bad RAM. This corruptoin is too severe.
