Refurbished HDDs

Thread Starter
I've noticed that on OCUK you can buy 2 refurbished 250gb seagate barracudas (7200.10) for almost the same as 1 new 320gb.

I'm keen to jump on this bargain, but do you think it's safe to do so?

What do they mean by refurbished? I'm worried that they screwed up on someone and by refurbished they mean "working but it's gonna do it again any time now". Is this the case?

I know there's always a chance of a HDD failing and these will be in RAID0 and used as my primary storage. A fail would hurt.

I personally wouldn't get a refurbished HD. Things like monitors or something are ok refurbished, but hard drives... that doesn't sound too good.

Hmmm I'm gonna go with the single drive. I'm way too unlucky with HDDs to do RAID0 anyway.

Yeah, refurbished drives in RAID 0 is far too much of a gamble.

New 250 GB drives are only $70 or so anyway, it's not worth it to gamble w/ refurbished hard drives unless you're using RAID 6 which can tolerate tons of failures. And anyone setting up RAID 6 paid enough for the card where they won't care about buying new drives.

why is it ?

refurbished means it been inspected and tested MORE than a normal hard drive, i would go for it

Refurbished HDDs are usually tested more extensivly than a normal HDD, I would definatly jump on these and RAID the beasts

Ive got 2 refurb WD drives, 2 years going strong. The only downfall I see is that typically refurb drives have a shorter warranty period than OEM drives. (IIRC)

Hey I'm no opponent of refurb drives, I get mah cheap hardwares anyway I can. Although I do trust WD a bit more than Seagate sometimes.
