I just don't like the idea of having a product that someone else sent back for whatever reason.

Refurbished probably just means used - not that some ailment has been fixed. You really can't do much physically to a HDD. It's either 100% working of completely f***ed. If they are selling it I would guess the former.

IMO there is little to no risk

Well, let's say someone's drive crapped out, they could possibly reuse the circuit board on the hard drive, and just replace the head and the plates inside the drive. But what if the circuit board had a defect that originally made the drive fail? And it wasn't detected as that?
