Forget the Opty 165-170?

Thread Starter
Is it best just to forget the optys as a up grade and get a x2 3800 and OC the hell out of it because it is so cheap? Or do I get the 170 because of the L2 and the multi being kinder to my board?

A Opty 165 will OC & Perform better than a X3800

A decent 165 stepping will get to 3Ghz Easy, and they have 2Mb of L2 Cache

The 9x Multi will help your OC aswell

At this point it's hard to find Opteron steppings that will go over 2.8GHz let alone 3GHz. One of the few close-to-guaranteed steppings was mine and they have since been long gone save for the ones that pop up on eBay every now and then.

If you're content with a 2.5 - 2.6GHz OC average then the X2 3800+ is a great choice - especially with the prices that they're going for. On Newegg alone, the price of the X2 3800+ is $84 versus $151 for the Opteron 165 and $190 for the Opteron 170.

While I love my Opteron (particularly because of the stepping I have), the current state of Opterons and their overclockability isn't much different from regular X2's since they're both at the end of their life. Besides, the X2 3800+ shares the same 10X multiplier with the Opteron 170 as opposed to the 9X on the 165. You won't likely notice any real world difference between the different L2 caches either.

Opteron 165 for the sheer regularity of their OCs.

Larger L2 cache nearly makes up a 200mhz clock difference between the X2 3800 and the 165.
See xbitlabs here
the difference becomes more apparent once the clock is raised.

SuperPi is a cache hungry program. More cache will win in most cases.(around the same clock speed) I don't understand why people would compare results from a program with such biased designs. Might as well race a F1 with a school bus.
