ATI 9600 Pro vs Onboard Video

Thread Starter
I'm thinking about upgrading my brother's computer.

He has an Abit NF-7 and an Athlon XP 2800 with a gig of DDR 400 RAM and an ATI 9600 Pro.

I'm going to give him my 3700 San Diego Processor, but was wondering if he'd take a hit on his gaming performance if I got him a board with integrated video versus his current setup.

Thanks for the help.

Because the 9600 Pro GPU (VPU) is from circa 2002, it's a good bet that even integrated GeForce 6100/6150 video solutions would probably outperform it.

The PC I'm typing this on (based on a Biostar TForce 6100-939) has integrated video; when I first got it, I used integrated video on it, and it ran fine. Of course, I don't use this machine to game, but I think that it'd handle games that ATI 9600 Pro did at least just as well, even if it's an integrated video solution.

I guess a good way to mitigate against poor video performance (to some degree, anyway) is to use 2GB of RAM. Since integrated video uses onboard RAM for its graphics memory, the more you have, the better.

Hope this helps!

The 9600 pro is more powerful than a 6200... though it has older technology, so you won't be able to play games with HDR... though i don't think you could get acceptable frame rates in a game with HDR with a 6200 anyway.

The 9600 would be better then onboard video, but it's not going to be blowing the better ones out of the water.

Actually, I was hoping to go to a PCI-Express capable board that had integrated video for the short term, then upgrade the GPU once he had more money.

BTW, thanks for all the input.
