Hard drive project maybe? - Page 2

you may want to run RAID on those if you get really up there in number of drives.. windows only has like 27 letters for drives.

Thats correct i believe they ether 1 don't want to deal with the international shipping. or 2 don't want to deal with all the website and so forth updates at this time.

Well this tower would be for JUST hard drives no mobo no cdroms no floppys nothing but HDDs so im sure i could get more then 21 bays

Not sure how to RAID drives never had to do it before.

I'm looking at running maybe around 20-35 drives.

For that many drives, you should build a file server. You would want to set it up in RAID as well. For that, I would dedicate a low-end ($100-200) system. Celeron, 512MB, and Linux to control the HDs. Besides, how would you connect 20+ IDE hard drives? It would be doable with SATA but I don't think you have enough PCI slots for controllers.
Once again...

BTW... what's the point? Storage space? You can get a get terabyte HDs.... Performance? You don't know what RAID is... and even if you did, just get a highend RAID controller.

Well i don't mind going to SATA, But getting the case and Linux OS might be a problem now that i think of it.

For one no idea where i can even buy a Linux OS second not sure where i can buy a server case to hold all my HDDs.

third not really sure how to hook everything up i mean i'm not a total noob here but i've never actually had to have 20+ HDDs hooked up before.

I only need this many now is because i'm getting more into my Djing and video editing for my B-Boy group.

So the more hard drives i have the better. I've already filled up both of my 500gb seagates in 2 months.

You can get versions of linux for free, just google for it.

Second, you can make any computer case hold like 30 hard drives, just get creative

Also, I wouldn't waste time w/ any really old drives. Just set up like 4 500GB drives in RAID 5.

W/ your current setup, if you don't have the money to spend on new drives, set up the 500s and 250s in JBOD, or set up the 500s in RAID 0, and the 250s in RAID 1 for more important stuff. And if you still wanna use the smaller drives, set those up together in JBOD. You don't want to mix drives that are TOO different in 1 array.

Btw, never pay more for bigger drives, if the cost per GB goes up. Get cheaper drives, and RAID them. Or deal w/ seperate disks. The convinience factor of having a 1TB drive over 2 500GB drives is NOT worth the massive premium.

Wait how would windows have 27 letters? Did they add a letter to the alphabet lol

Hard drives are getting cheaper and cheaper, if i were you i would go buy some really cheap really big hard drives.

But just be creative and you can fit a bunch of hard drives in a separate case. Although i don't see how this would work having all your hard drives in one case, and your mobo in another. That would need you to run multiple IDE cables from one case to another, and you would need to have a power supply just for the hard drive case.

So you basically have 2 towers side by side one is your computer and the other is just your hard drive tower.

I have 2x 500gb 2x 250gb 3x 80gb 2x 40gb and 1 20gb and i want to use them all.

I'm a Dj and i do a lot of music editing and so forth and need the space but my current upgrade to 2x 500gb just isent enough right now. And i dont have the money right now to upgrade to the new 750's.

How in the world did you run out of 1TB of space just with music. I understand you edit but seriesly maybe i'm not getting something. How much space does that stuff take up?
