Looking for help... has anyone elses overclocks failing with P5W DH

Thread Starter
I had a stable overclock with FSB Freq at 400 - RAM at 800 - vcore 1.5 - FSB 1.4 - MCH 1.75 - vICH 1.2 - vDIMM 2.1 until weeks ago. Now I'm struggling to get over FSB Freq 380 regardless of any combination of voltages. All BIOS settings as expected for O/C, i.e. all performance and cooling 'features' are disabled. I use SPD timings because OCZ doesn't like to take manual timings above about 380.

Now I have to back it off to 378 making it 3.4. If I use my oc setting at 3.6 it either no post or sometimes if i am lucky, going into windows then it freeze. It was on water and load temp is around 50 idle temp is 30 (previous oc temp). I even use the fan optional fan on the nb. My case had a good air flow + watercooled cpu and gpu.

At first i was thinking my old antec tp 2.0 550 psu was dying and replaced with the silverstone op 1000w and still couldn't get back to my previous oc.

If my mobo or cpu dying? anyway to check instead of buying another mobo or cpu? I checked the ram with memtest and boot it 1:1 to cpu and boot it at ddr 800 with no errors.

I even tested my 3.4 oc with orthos overnight and it ran fine.

Have you reset CMOS? Try it and start from scratch.

Also, have you done and BIOS upgrades recently?

Yeah, try resetting CMOS.

Pull out the silver circular battery on your motherboard. Leave it out and wait for 1 min and put it back in. See how that goes.

Note that some motherboard takes a bit longer than 1 min. Some takes as fast as 30 seconds.

Try each stick of RAM individually. I had a similar issue long ago and RMA'd everything saving the RAM for last. Guess what the problem ended up being.

My first guess would've been the power supply unit, but the Silverstone is top notch. If ram tests ok on memtest its not the problem unless the vdimm voltages
are high or too low, possibly too tight on the timings!
Its possible the vcore may have been too high too long on the cpu but I doubt it if your watercooling had been functioning properly.
My final guess would be bad capacitors built onto the mobo going bad. First check dust buildup isn't collecting in the mobo's back corners and keep wires/cables frictions away from the mobo. gL

Yes I did a bios upgrade after the problem and the latest bios 2004 didn't solve it. I used bios 1607 b4. I will try resetting cmos tomorrow and see if it do any good. I will try the ram also.

I tried both the cmos and ram method but no luck
I think there is a bad capacitors somewhere on the mobo, which i have no idea how to check. Can i rma the board ? If so what do i tell them?? Bad overclock or what?? Will I get any problems in the future if i back the oc and use it till the mobo died?

Given that Asus promotes overclockability so heavily, I think an RMA for that reason is legit.
