Time for an upgrade...whatcha think?

current system =
Machspeed p4mb blah blah socket 775
celeron 2.9 clocked to 3.1Ghz
1 gig Ultra PC3200
1 seagate barracuda 7200.1 160gb hd
PSU came with Just4PC Gazelle case 450w, has not failed yet
nVidia 6600GT OC'd

Current 3Dmark05(?) is ~9100 (eww)

NEW BUILD:
amd X2 5600+ (was going to go with 6000, but need to shave a few bucks, and it's performance is not worth the 40 bucks to me)
GIGABYTE GA-M55SLI-S4 Socket AM2 NVIDIA nForce4 SLI (seemingly very popular card for entry level gaming machine in AM2 socket)
Corsair XMX2 2GB set(IMO, in the performance arena, unless you are OC'ing, get the best memory you can afford...and corsair has a decent pricepoint, no?)
Kingwin ABT520 520w PSU (?)
MSI 8800GTS 320Mb - top card for the money (280)
Western Dig RAPTOR 10k rpm SATA-150 150GB HD (10K RPM's??!?!?!? YEAH BABY

Comes in at $925, and 90 bucks in rebates. Net cost $835.

Any tweaks I should do to this?

You save a lot of money, and the Brisbane core is far superior to the Windsor core. A 3.0GHZ overclock for these 3600's is pretty much an everyday thing.

Kingwin makes junk PSU's. I'd take a better PSU, and a cheaper processor.

So i went with Mushkin PSU, 600w.

I'm still having trouble with the statement that the Brisbane core trumps the Windsor core. I can dig the 65 vs. 90 nm argument but what does not lie are the specs. The 5600 CRUSHES the 3600 at stock speeds. I do not plan on OC'ing any time soon, and you would have to run that 3600 at it's max to get anywhere near the CPU performance I'll have with the 5600. My only reason (well...reasons) for not going to the 6000 were A. lower cost ($40 - 80 lower) and a little article on THG which pit these two chips against one another and the 5600 actually outperformed in some tasks. Games were one of the 5600's stronger points.

so tell me again why I should go w/ 3600?
gawd i can't wait to fire this thing up. I love newegg...order by noon on friday, pick up at UPS hub saturday morning and I didn't even pay for overnight shipping LMAO!

Stock 5600 = 2.8 ghz @ $179 (max oc around 3 ghz)

Stock x2 = 1.9 ghz @ $69 (max oc around 3 ghz)

Here is a 3600 brisbane at > stock 5600

Agreed. Get the X2 3600+ and overclock it. It will hit over 3.0GHz fairly easily. The 5600+ won';t overclock any better, since a bit over 3.0GHz is the limit of the architecture (on air).

And if you're on 3600+ why not go Biostar 550? Those two seem to work perfect.

finally got around to doing some benchmarks...

Aquamark3 = 108,621 no clocking.
Aquamark3 = 112,964 GPU clocked to 603/850 and CPU pushed to 2.96 - unable to physically tell the difference between the two, and honestly...not worth the heat increase.

more to come...

screw nVidia AND the firewall they rode in on. after a week of chasing BSOD's, finally pinned it down to a firewall nVidia decided to package with their chipset update. heck, at one point i was running a CPU test on 3dmark06 and getting 0-1 fps

I should have it ready for more testing tonight after work.
