Patch after Patch after Patch

*** is up with Blizzards patching? I've just re-installed WoW (about 2.5 hours ago) and every time I log in THERES ANOTHER PATCH!

Every MMO i've played, the patches are downloaded at one time, in less time (except EQ which has about 10 gigs worth of patches, i mean 13 expansions? lol).

I only wanted to get online to chat it up with old EQ buddies who moved to WoW, and here I am wasting an evening with patches.

Anyone else find that highly annoying?

AFAIK, there's 5 patches to download from the first CD's, patch to 1.12, patch to 1.2, patch to 1.2.3 patch to 1.2.7, patch to 1.2.8 and patch to 1.2.10 which we're running on now.

If you bought the game later on (half a year back), you don't need to download patch 1.12

I don't find it annoying... I would find it annoying if I had to download every single patch, instead of the large ones.

Im jsut now installing BC, and the thing that aggrevates me about this patching, is that you have to constantly restart it, log in, download -download -install... over and over. Wish they could put it all in one download.

What is annoying is when you have to install all the patches like you are describing instead of having a later patch that includes the previous ones, I belive Blizzard have been good boys that way on their other games, right? (Starcraft, Warcraft X and Diablo X)

Depending on how frequently patches are released, single-upgrade patches from any previous version are not always a viable option. MMOs are especially susceptible to this, since they often have frequent mandatory patches. Such patches are not usually collected into a single package until the next packaged release / add-on pack.

what would be nice is if when it is patching that it realizes that there are X amount of patches that you need and then DL's all of them, installs all of them and then you are finished in one step

WoW's patching isn't one step with multiple patches? UO used to be, I kind of assumed it was standard if an old game like that did it. It would download, apply, download, apply, etc. until you were fully patched...one step for the user.

If you're saying that downloading all X patches in one download session, then applying them one after another without having to go back to the net again, would be better...I'm not sure how it wouldbe better. Same amount of download time, same amount of patching time...

But would require that I only log in once to get all the patches and one restart after installing them, as opposed to 5 log ins and 5 restarts.

Well that's what I mean...yes, asking you to log in again for each patch is not good. In UO, the patcher was a shim program that launched before you ever got a chance to log in. It would just launch, do it's thing (i.e. patch you from whatever version you had to whatever the current version was), and only then did it ask you to login. Much better solution.

I can only imagine WoW didn't go UO's route to prevent people without active accounts from getting hold of the auto-patch function? I.e. to prevent people playing on illegal private shards from getting patches. But they still shouldn't make you re-login after every patch.

You do know that you can download patches from the 'net as executables and then run them whenever you need to patch your game?

Here's a standalone patch 1.12 installer.

To find others, just Google "wow patch [old version] to [new version]".
