New rig, need opinions

Thread Starter
So I have decided to sell my current rig. It is kind of sad because it has sentimental value to me. Just the case and PSU (long story) but I think it is time to give it to someone who needs it more then me. I am selling for roughly $350 which I think is pretty fair. I am not selling the sound card though, save that because the buyer doesn't need it.

Enough of the background story, I am planning on building a new rig that will be running linux, I am dropping windows all together and going to linux. I am sick of dealing with M$ and such. I need an opinion on the best distro of linux I should get, I am thinking Gentoo or Slackware. I want one that is the most customizable and also better for like xfce & running games.

The rig is going to be something like this:

Case $76
CHENMING CMUI-P-601AEB-0 Black 1.0mm SECC Server Computer Case

Power Supply $58
HIPER HPU-4M480-PS ATX12V v2.2 480W

Disk Drive $34
Philips Black DVD Burner Combo Drive

Motherboard $87
GIGABYTE GA-M55SLI-S4 Socket AM2 NVIDIA nForce4 SLI

Processor $70
AMD Athlon 64 X2 3600+ Brisbane 1.9GHz 2 x 512KB L2 Cache Socket AM2

Memory (RAM) $61
G.SKILL 1GB 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400)

Hard Drive $49
Western Digital Caviar SE WD800JB 80GB 7200 RPM 8MB Cache IDE Ultra ATA100

Video Card $106
XFX PVT86JUAF3 GeForce 8500GT 256MB 128-bit GDDR2 PCI Express x16

Any suggestions for changing anything, I am on a tight budget but is there anything I should change that will be for the better? Should I get a different video card since I am going Linux?

Thanks alot and of course, rep for those who help

Yeah I figured to go with an 8600GT but at that price range, I also do not need DX10 support, I am going Linux so I was also thinking about something in the 7900 series range.

Dood, preety much any 8000 series video card will do with linux. Linux imaging uses OPENGL and so do the games. DX10 dont mean jack unless you're going to dual boot or emulate with WINE etc...

a 7600GS performed exactly the same as my X1800XT on Ubuntu 7.04

I know that but the 8600 series are a lil pricey considering their level of performance.

I'd suggest going to whatever Linux distribution you choose before upgrading your rig. A good Linux install will feel much faster than any M$ configuration. Get your distribution (If I chose to go back to Linux, I'd go slackware) and see where you are at before shelling out a grand for new hardware designed to run a hog like Vista.

I need help choosing a card because I am selling my full rig. That includes the x850xt. And a 7900 is a total option. I have decided on an XFX 7900GS Extreme.
