Read threads before posting!

Hi guys,

I ran into a very unfortunate incident the other day and wanted to take a few minutes to share it.

Whenever you post a response, you are responsible for completely understanding to what you have responded.

A couple of days ago a thread was started out by asking a completely legitimate system/networking question. A few posts into that thread the original poster decided to voice his intent to exploit a potential hole in his school's security. This is in direct violation of our TOS. (at this point the thread should have been closed, but we didn't find out about it until later) In a subsequent post (same thread) he asked another question that was completely legitimate if taken out of the context of the thread. Another member reading just the last post responded with the appropriate response and was infracted. Understandably this member was very upset with the infraction because all he did was answer a question.

Our policy has always been that ignorance of a rule or situation will never grant you immunity. After realizing what had happened I discussed this issue with one of the community directors to see what should be done. It was decided that the infraction should stay. Here is a quote from the conversation:

I realize I am a strict director, there are plenty of areas that I generally use a no tolerance policy. Piracy and Security issues are at the top of that list. Being strict won't make me very popular, but at least know that I do this because I really care for this site. I try to create threads like this one to warn people of situations that might turn into infractions.

P.S. I kept specific names from the above incident out on purpose. If you recognize the situation keep it to yourself. Infractions are private matters and should not be discussed in public. I only brought it up publically so that others might take heed.

You cant do that or OCN will lose its advertisers. No money for ADmin. and no forum for us

EDIT: Just create a thread and ask who's good at something then just PM each other

I gotsted me an infraction once. I giggled because of the reason

Honestly, it's one infraction, it's not a big deal. I applaud the directors for keeping this a moderately clean/safe forum. Legal issues are a very big deal these days and everyone has to watch their own rearend.

No you didn't, that was just a warning.

I hope you realize why that happened. If not, shoot me a pm and I will direct you to a thread that advertised why you shouldn't do what you did.

My sentiments exactly.

Gotta play the "game" guys.

Another thing is, people seem to enjoy arguing their warnings or infractions w/ the mods in public threads. Why not take it to PM? Sure, you want to prove your "point" to your peers.. but at what cost? I think it would go over much more respectfully if it were one on one, myself..

I like how MODS handle stuff here but some MODS are downright...dont get me started. MODS...please..whenever someone is did something wrong let us know and if someone is going to close a thread at least have a decency to PM you on why they closed it. Its just common courtesy.

Oh I realized completely after I got the warning (yeah, it was a warning, my bad on terminology ), was most of the reason why I just laughed it off. I made a mistake

No problems here!

agreed. many vigorous claps for admin and mods.

i think another point that needs to be made here is that its every member's right to dispute an infraction, but it is NOT every member's right to try and make the final decision.

the mods run this site, so we play by their rules the reason mods are strict on this site, as stated before, is that if (hypothetically) someone were to cause a crash on a computer system using information from OCN, they could potentially be held liable, and may be shut down depending on the severity of the situation- nobody would want that to happen!

in other news, new reports released today tell us that really, infractions are no big deal. they go away, life goes on.

"As long as you take note of the actions that caused you to receive an infraction it is highly unlikely that you will ever be banned. Most members that are banned make no effort to correct their mistakes and continue to rack up points. "

long story short- dont do stupid stuff, you'll be fine. no biggy.

usually if a threads gonna be closed, you will know full well why it is being closed without getting a PM......ppl dont always need to explain it.

for example, a guy the other day made a post disagreeing with mods, and in that post he wrote something to the effect of "im glad some people read my post before Agent Smith deleted it". we can infer from this that he knew full well why his post was deleted, and its not neccesary for mods to explain it to him.

however. on some occasions there is a more "in between the lines" reason why a mod would delete a post. in these instances it has been my experience that a mod will let you know why a post or thread was deleted or edited if that reason or motive was not clearly visible using pure common sense. if its complicated, they'll let you know. not to worry.

EDIT....again......

[QUOTE] EDIT: Just create a thread and ask who's good at something then just PM each other [QUOTE]

may i remind you that the mods take time to monitor the PM system as well..... i know this was a joke but if someones talking about hacking a school server via PM, and then it goes down, saying "well, it was PMed, it wasnt OCN's fault" wont get them out of trouble. in short, its just as illegal when you do it privately. and just as much against the TOS.

Sometimes the reason is blatantly obvious, so don't expect a PM. In most other cases, I am sure if you re-read the TOS you can figure it out. I try to send a PM when I delete a border-line thread, but with so many posts sometimes I don't have the time. If all else fails send a PM to a director and they will look into why a thread got deleted.

I know all about the TOS. The funny thing is a thread will be ok to some MODS and some will not. Its all about perspective
