2 cable modems in 1 house

Thread Starter
is it possible to use 2 cable modems in 1 house?

like 1 modem in one room, and the other modem in another room?

i have 3 computers, 1 cable modem, a wireless router, and a 5mb cable connection. everytime i torrent something with my wirelessly connected computer my router crashes and restarts.

so i was wondering if buying a modem for my computer (wireless one) will prevent the router from crashing (since theres no traffic). but if having 2 modems will provide both connections with the 5mb bandwidth.

It should work. Only problem is if you're torrenting on one, it'll steal bandwidth and make the other one slow as if you were on one line.

I think you would need to pay the ISP extra for additional modem.
Once again...

Do you really want to pay for two modems every month?

EDIT: Yes you will have to pay for both IP's/MAC's...I work for a cable company. The only time we see this happening is in large college houses with high bandwidth requirements. But you can do it if your willing to pay for it.

you may get issues with you cable provider. . . I think the service is tied to the MAC address so you would have to pay for another line. . .i think . .

They mean you have to pay for 2 services to use both modems. Thier tied to the internal macs to allow you to use the service.

What kind of router do you have that shuts down? Or is it the modem that restarts? Either way I would google the problem or look in to getting the bad one replaced.

its a netgear WGT624 v2.

im not sure if its the actual router itself or the asus wifi module that came with my mobo.

but thanks for all the replies. i guess ill pass on the second modem since its gonna cost me another $60/month. i might just invest in a gigabit wlan or a better wifi card for my desktop.
