Help: BSOD

Thread Starter
Hi guys now this is going to be a hard one because my friend called me with the problem so I can not and have not had my hands on the computer in question, but here are the symptoms.

The computer is a P3 poweredge server from dell. It has 2 600Mhz P3’s, 4 x 128mb ram, scsi and ide hardrives. Anyway it was running fine as a file server than it BSOD. Now all it will do is start up run through the bios than when loading Windows after about 20 seconds of loading it BSOD’s than restarts and keeps trying forever if you let it.

He has pulled all memory and tried one at a time with no change, tried one p3 at a time no luck.

I told him it sounds like a hard drive problem. (though it is not making weird noises). Or that Windows got corrupted some how. To try and reinstall windows (windows is one its own hard drive so no info loss would occur).

Any other ideas?

Thanks

If you have the orginal cd that would be the best option. Also can you take the windows hdd out and plug it into another computer? If you can do that then you can fix it. Let me find the post about going into the hdd.

opps forgot he tried safe mode no luck. I knew i was forgetting something that he tried. Middleman always gets in the way.

I will suggest he tries windows reinstall or repair.

Can't take out and see if the hdd with window will boot on another system because it is a scsi hd and he has no other computers with scsi connector.

Thanks for the help

Well BSOD's happen for all sorts of reasons. An important system file could be corrupted, a drive could be corrupted, a virus could also cause one too.

If I were him, I would reinstall all my drivers, if possible. I would also run some virus scans. If for some reason I still get a BSOD. I would try reparing Windows, and if I was still SOL I would just reinstall Windows.

Best bet: Renistall drivers, run a scan, and try to repair Windows.

I have passed all information on to him. As to my knowledge he has not tried or been successful at anything yet. I will update with any farther information I receive from him. Since he works and is not in a hurry to get this server fixed, it might be a while.

Thanks to all for the help
