One Terabyte - Page 3

I read in this history book from the future that at some point humans realized that computers weren't just for gaming and music. ***? That's absurd!

Some persons use their machine's to make things.

The Serious Pursuit of Making Things(tm), generally requires lots of space.

For instance, I make lots of low-fi, home-spun videos ... music, narrative and otherwise ... and I get buy with a mere 300gb.

Other folks, like Audi (who I confess to being envious of to the point of hatred) have several or more terrabytes at their disposal, ... all simply because we/they like making things of moving images and sound.

(j.k. Audi!)

Not everyone is only concerned with playing games, downloading songs or IPoDz.

There's lots of things to do with a terrabyte other than just filling it with static warez.

something i'm working on is linked in the above thread somewhere ...

figured you'd already seen it as i've posted it several places: in progress

...

i've got about 100+ hours of DV footage i've shot over the past 10 years; i've never had enough space to seriously archive it so have to rip it from DVD as i need it.

for the most part, i've archived all my DV footage to DVD discs; not being concerned with hi def stuff ... the DVD archive solution is fine for now and doesn't require lots of HD space ... just lots of discs.

But if i were a hardcore video pro then i would buy 2x 500gb and RAID them....

I bet that some one is going to say "But hey, if you whant 2tb then its easyer to RAID 2x 1tb".

That would be a great place to start ...

For video stuff, at least insofar as my experience with SCSI sub systems is concerned ... is way faster than non RAID.

I had a RAID 0 system about 6 years ago, using LVD drives (dated now, but still good) ... and it was amazing.

Not true.

If you rip your own DVDs to store on your hard drive at full quality, you can use up MORE space then downloaded movies. A full quality DVD can easily use up 8 GB of space. just 100 movies will use up almost all your space, and I know people with over 100 movies.

First off, welcome to the club Fishie

I have had 1.2TB for a while now. (almost 2TB total from all my systems all networked together)

Second....

That is amazingly short-sighted of you, not to mention presumptuous. The system I have my 1.2TB array on is my extreme HTPC. I use it to store LEGALLY purchased movies so that I can have my most watched available at the flick of a mouse button instead of walking back to the library. I also use it to record hours and hours of TV that I can't watch at the same time, and I like my TV in good quality........so a 30minute sitcom takes up almost 3GB of space.

And then there is my music collection, about 16 years of CDs..........

I hope to put together a RAID 5 array for the house with 4 of Seagate's 1TB hard dives next year.......

So no, 1TB of storage space is NOT just for pirates........

Once again, welcome to the club Fishie
