These new cases from Xclio have 36CM side fans! - Page 3

I think you'd be better off getting yourself something like a Thermaltake Soprano. It's cheaper than the XCLIO's you've listed, and it has quick release fittings for your drives and adapter cards.

I agree you need enough pull but if you get a strong enough 120mm back fan..Think about it...Cool air coming in and the video card, case fan and power supply are sucking it out. It's also help cooling down the huge Zalman 9700 heatsink I want, the memory and all the heat related circuitry on the motherboard. You can make the fans really slow or really fast with the speed controller in the front and the one in the PCI slot on the back.

PCs, with the new graphics cards, draw more power and so get hotter. They need more CFM to maintain reasonable case temperatures. The problem is, the energy required to double the CFM of a given fan (120mm for example) is proportional to the cube of the CFM increase and for doubling is 8X. It turns out that 5/6 of that energy becomes noise. So, double your CFM with the same size fan and your noise goes up 15dB (which is a *lot*).

A larger fan allows you to get more CFM at lower air velocity. So, the fan is quieter even though pushing more air. The new large fans have been a big success in this area. But this success comes at a price:

The original Xclio 3060 case, for example, is a perfectly standard 200mm-wide PC case whose left side panel was modified to mount the big fan, called "250mm" although it's obviously just 220mm. A 200mm-wide case is the right size to hold a 160mm-high tower HSF with a coupla mm to spare.

But the new fan ate up 1.4" of that space, leaving only 133mm for HSF clearance. So the tallest HSF becomes the Freezer64 Pro (at 126.5mm). The gamers need bigger and better HSFs to cool their overclocked CPUs...

Hence the new wart on the side of the Xclio 3060PLUS. The big fan has been moved outside the 200mm-wide case, and now the big HSFs will fit again. An additional benefit is there are no worries about the inside big-fan clearing the PSU and the optical disk drive cages, which is why the 250/220mm fan wasn't bigger.

Now that clearance of the PSU etc is no longer an issue, an even bigger fan can be used, which will push a given CFM even more quietly than the 250/220mm fan did. The price is the wart.

And, the price has been jacked 'way up at Newegg. I bought two original Xclio 3060s from them at $35 ea. They want $100 for the new PLUS. That's an expensive wart, people!

I believe ALL the Xclio cases are made for gaming hence 250mm or 360mm side fans with lots of space...Man, I've never seen such a good post. ^

It depends on what you think is ugly or not. I see you have an Antec Lanboy which is nice but it doesn't have any side fans and is too small for my liking.
