With the proposed components that are in your sig the multiplier is not what will be holding back your overclock. The motherboard you have chosen can easily do 400+ fsb which is 3.6 ghz with a 9x multiplier. 3.6ghz is a pretty damn high overclock on a E4300 or E4400 which you almost certainly would not be able to sustain without more extreme cooling. So at that point what will be the limiting factor on how high you can overclock will be heat and voltage. So go for the E4300.

Save yourself the extra 20 to put towards something else, you will find that the e4x00 series chips are overall clockspeed limited and not fsb.
Example:

e4300 -> 333 x 9 = 3 ghz
e4400 -> 300 x 10 = 3 ghz

Most e4400/e4300 owners have hit the 3 ghz mark easily anything beyond that seems to lend itself to exponential vCORE uppage. These allendale cores simply aren't binned for speed like the conroes.

i can't find anything about the two that are different....the 4400 just has a higher multi resulting in higher stock clock...so the fsb is still the same...right?

my exp. with the 4300 makes me think that the 4400 is better for non oc'ers...and the 4300 is better for oc'ers...here is why

the 4300 is somewhat limited in oc b/c of heat....i found that 3.6Ghz on air cooling is almost impossible to have with safe temps...lower the multi to 8x and your at 3.2Ghz, the cpu runs much cooler...same fsb, diff multi...near same performance..

10x multi with 400fsb = 4Ghz...that would mean higher temps...so you would lower your fsb or your multi to get lower temps....either one you do, the end result is you are not going to get above 3.4-3.6ghz with either cpu...most water cooling systems may not even be enough to cool the cpu at that point...

so if you are looking at either cpu only going 3.3ish, i would just go with the cheaper cpu...save a little $$ maybe...

Just go with the E4300. You mobo can give it plenty of FSB and will max out the chip before you max out the FSB.

With the E4300 and E4400 having quality memory isn't really a huge deal. Since if your memory can do DDR2 800 you can run at 400 fsb without even overclocking and that will yeild overclocks of 3.6ghz and 4ghz respectively which is probably a lot higher than you are going to be able to go anyway. So really if you even have some pretty good memory it isn't going to be holding you back.

I'd save an extra hundred bucks on the temporary cpu with a d805....you have enough cooling and that board will easily carry it to 3.5Ghz, and that should be plenty for a temporary solution. Take the hundred bucks and buy a bj from a toothless hooker.
