Just curious, what's the difference between 4 pin / 8 pin CPU power supply? When I put my comp together I noticed there was a little cover over 4 of the pins on the CPU power supply. So I either had the choice of breaking the power supply cable in half (it splits in half for reverse compatability) and plugging in 4 pins, or pulling the cover off. I pulled the cover off and put in all 8 pins.

Do dual cores require 8 pins and P4s and lower only have 4 pins or something?

no its amp's

both are 12volts

the 8 pin supplies more amps

Nope, it just depens on the motherboard. Most (if not all) new mobos use the 8-pin connector.

Does the dual core CPU NEED the extra amps? If not then why did they change the specification

8 pin is for server boards but most new PC boards let you plug in an 8 pin though all you really need is a 4 pin.

Look at the quad cores they use a decent amount of power

I don't think it's possible for a CPU to use that much power unless there's mandatory water or phase cooling. Think about the heat output!

I had this same question and i did some research. You can operate with the 4 pins for cpu power, but it is advised to not over clock if you have an 8 pin connector and you are using 4 pins. this does nto mean you cannot do it.

the sets are connected in parallel. the purpose of it is to draw more power - > AMPS for power hungry cpus. getting a 4 pin to 8 pin converter to connect the 8 pin on the mobo with you 4 pin from psu IS POINTLESS. it defeats the whole propose. you are still drawing the same amount of power through the 4 wires. what you should do is buy a GOOD psu, almost all GOOD psu's today will come with 8 pin cpu power connector with 8 wires, unless the manufacturer has taken this into account and has upgraded the wires to handle the load meaning -> 4 wires into 8 pins.

usually u only see the 8 pin cpu power connectors on HIGH end mobos. or servers. u can operate with 4, at first it was thought up because of dual core cpus.

4 wires is enough to power any CPU. You really only need an 8 pin for dual CPU systems.
