Pook's first lap :D

Stock:

It's not bad...but it can be better.

After 600 grit:

Damn. I made it ugly. (I thought I was doing it wrong for a while - but I looked at some other peoples laps and 600 looks ugly for them too)

After 800 grit:

Lot better, still not very mirror like though.

After 1000 grit:

ZING! Started to really shape up after 1000 grit.

After 1200 grit:

Not that big of an improvement from 1000.

After 1500 grit:

The BEST improvement from any other grit to grit. (1200 -> 1500). I was pretty damn surprised. Started to look nice.

After 2000 grit:

Looks a lot like 1500, just with more "gloss." (If that makes any sense.) I 'unno what happened to the picture though, guess I was shaking in excitement.

Done! (2500 grit):

I think it came out damn good. 'Specially for a first lap job.

I was getting 43/45C idle temps at about a 28C ambient temp and last night with a 26.5C ambient I was getting 46/48C idle temps due not knowing how much AS5 to use when lapped. Working on it now. (Ambients are only about 23C now, so they are already lower, but only by about 2C. I'm gunna play around with redoing AS5 to see how low I can get.)

Oh, and my little brother (6) wanted to help, so I told him how to make a sign and how to do it and he did it and I took the picture. He was all excited he got to help, so figure I put it up.

nicely done For the AS5, a little amount (like a dot in the middle of the CPU) and it should work well. +REP

Nice lap Now all it needs is that you do it on your CPU too so you won't need (or close to) any thermal paste.

I've tried a buncha methods (including that one...). Closest I got was 2C above non-lapped temps. (It's still flat - checked with a grid, just no pic of that.)

I tried the line method.
BB in the middle.
Half a bb in the middle.
BB in the middle, spread it with finger in baggie.

BB in the middle, put heatsink on, twist a bit, then set it.

Going to try a very very very very little bit to see if that is ok. My CPU is pretty damn flat, so I *might* be just using too much. I wet my finger (water) and put the water on the CPU and stuck the heatsink on it (not locked in the mobo) and lifted up to see if it was airtight and it was...so...

I 'unno. I just gotta play with it.
