Is my Q6600 dead? - Page 3

Its sounds likely to me that your CPU is dead but you should first eliminate the potential of the motherboard being the problem. I say this as I'm now up to my third P5N32-E SLi myself. Both of my previous board's had latent faults with them. At first there were issues with POSTing and I eventually found out that neither of their bottom PCI-Express slots worked. One obvious recommendation is to make double sure that you have connected the 8-pin 5v+ and 24-pin 12v+ power cables to the motherboard securely. The location of the 5v+ can make it fidley to secure properly with a large HSF installed.

Just to make double sure that the CPU is indeed the problem, try turning on your system without any RAM DIMMs installed at all. If there still aren't any beeps then this means that the POST is holding at the CPUINIT stage. Finally, put a RAM DIMM back in but remove the CPU itself and power on just to confirm that the motherboard will put out beeps to notify of no CPU being present.

Seeing as its been confirmed that the CPU isn't the problem I suggest that you try booting your system with no RAM DIMMs installed at all and no adapter cards (graphics, audio, network, etc). You wont see any POST or display on your monitor but the point of the exercise is to see if the motherboard is working. It should let out beeps to alert you to there being no RAM installed. If after trying this the motherboard fails to peform such a simple operation as a POST error beep, then it will confirm that the board is indeed dead.

Thats what I was thinking. CPUs are pretty tough...its the mobo or the RAM that usually fails.

Why in the world would you even think about taking the heatsink off and turning on the computer. Let alone with a quad core, Im guessing his temps were easily 120C. Im very surprised the thing didn't start on fire instantly.

Your friend says the chip still works..? Thats impressive, and I doubt that the chip doesn't have some type of damage.

My guess is the motherboard isn't working right, if it wasn't the processor. Word of advice, you are a very lucky dude to still have that processor in working condition, never ever try that again.

You're crazy dude. What compelled you to try this? No offense, but this reminds me of that episode of Beavis and Butthead where they're both in shop class using the table saw to cut all sorts of stuff in half (lunchboxes, chairs, picture frames, etc.) and Beavis, while starring at the rotating blade, becomes mesmerized by it, and all those little dots begin to circle his head as he's taken in by it. Long story short, he ends up cutting his finger off when he touches it. The rest of the episode is just funny as he finally gets it surgically reattached only to have it fall off again while picking his nose.

ANYWAY, what went through your mind right before you made the conscience choice to hit the power button with no HS.. or is this just a joke thread?
