It depends on if they are still running their 12 month no payment promo or not. If they aren't I'm just going to drop $100-150 on something that will work, $150 on a nice mic and $40 on a nice cable. If they are running it I will be surprised if I get out of there for under $1k lol!
No need to spend $1k. Specially if your just getting some ideas down and putting a band together.
Get some decent software (vegas, etc.), a decent sound card with the appropriate interfaces, a couple decent mics (1 condensor, 1 cardoid) ... and your good to go for making demos and whatever else you have to do.
Sony Vegas v. 6 : $300.00
Soundblaster Live! w/ LiveDrive: $25.00
Sure SM58 Cardoid/Vocal Mic: $100.00
Audiotechnica Lo-z Condenser Mic: $130.00
Various cables: $50.00
(and of course, a decent computer to go with it all)
$605.00 total (roughly) ...
When you said 'firewire' setup from Guitar Center ... did you mean like a 'turn-key' package or something?
For tinkering and homebrew work ... I'd suggest going with a software solution, personally ... until you get your band together and want to start doing serious for-release tracks ... in which case, and if your good, you'll probably find yourself in somebody *else's* studio recording to 1" analogue ...
