What is with steam?

Thread Starter
Todays is my birthday (technically), so my brother was nice and got me counterstrike source, because I have wanted to play it for a while now. Anyway after I get done installing it, steam starts up, then dies after I put in my cd key, so I have to restart steam and it looks like it took my cd key ok, anyway it starts and loads pretty fast and suddenly stops when it says "ready to play in: 1 second"... three minutes later, it kind of flickers and says "ready to play in: 5 hours" which quickly got reduced to around a half an hour , but still.

Is Steam like this for everyone?

Yeah. Steam sucks. You have to leave it on until it says 'Ready to Play' .. But it shouldn't jump up to 5 hours. Strange. Maybe it's just that the speed of the download dropped so rapidly that it had to go up.

Sometimes Steam's servers are very busy - think about how many people are also trying to download CS: Source

this should only happen after your first load of a game. After you download the game which can take up to 2hrs+ depending on connection or if you had it on disc. Then it will update the game. If you got the game on disc it will take longer to do the update. You should only see this again when steam does another major update for the game. Make sure steam starts with windows, because it will auto update when in the task bar.

I find it's best to load it after starting Windows, personally. Just when you need it.

i disagree, you can't just blame it on steam. it could be other problems (like firewall, slow connection, windows not update, etc.)
