I need a free OS similar Windows.

Thread Starter
I'm looking for a free OS that I can run on VMware. I know there's Linux and Ubuntu, but I do not know any command keys nor if games are playable on them.

Are there any free OS similar to Windows?

ReactOS is an open-source Windows clone, but at this time it is still in very early alphas and is not practical for day-to-day use.

If you want DirectX games, you're stuck with Windows. While Wine (a set of programs that let you run Windows apps on *nix operating systems) is good for most applications you can't find a *nix version of, it has difficulty with many games. (WoW and most source engine games work fine, though, if you play those)

Most people feel that KDE (a linux window manager) is a simmilar look and feel to Windows. Try out Kubuntu for a very easy to setup distro. You'll litterally never have to touch a console until the OS is fully set up and running, and then anything you might need can be copied and pasted from Firefox. Everything, and I mean everything, is autoconfigured.

And a few notes:
>When I say *nix, that refers to Unix, Linux, and all of their assorted spinoffs, including BSD and several others.
>It's worth noting that Ubuntu is linux. It just happens to be one of the most popular distributions.

Try Freespire...http://freespire.org/

It's Linux for beginners, and It's very similar to windows. You don't need to know any command keys, since just about everything can be configured by using the GUI alone.

I agree, Ubuntu is very nice indeed. I use it on a old coppermine PIII, and it works like a charm.
