CyberDruid's Naked 900

Thread Starter
I really like the Antec 900.

I am doing a lot of mods based on the case..mods that I hope will be interesting to other 900 owners

This particular version I call "Naked 900" because you can see right into it from the front. Pics to follow

I started by removing the front bezel and stripping the removable HDD bays from the case. Anyone who has a Rpator knows that they can get a little noisy--and a lot of people do not know that properly cushioning a Raptor will slightly increase it's longevity and performance by dampening the vibrations.n They also are secured by the same thumbscrews that held the bays

Now I like RAID and from the way I built Velocitor trying to use the HDD bays I got restricted to only 3 drives--with the other bay housing the pump. Considering many mobos controla as many as 6 drives it just seemed like I would have to figure a way to get more drives--yet still fit the pump and Optical and Resevoir...

To that end I got me a mess of Scythe HDD mounts--these are really sweet adapters that totally isolate the drive from shock and vibration.

Besides that obvious benefit removing the HDD bays also increase airflow dramatically as the bays are smaller than the fans in front of them.

When I said you could see right in I mean right in

I cut, routed, drilled, routed again, sanded and scrapd the edges...it is specific to a PLextor Slot Drive and a SunBeam fancontroller--I like the slot load a lot--it is gonna be cool just shovind a disk into th glowing plexi...

Everything lines up pretty nice...the space below the SunBeam is for viewing the resevoir...which is optional--as this face panel could be either water or air cooled..

I drilled for the LEDs too so the controller could lay flat to the acrylic--I really like the feel of the Sunbeam--it is very postive and heavy with a serious click when it is off. The knobs turn easily with the pressure of a fingertip inserted into the routed hole...

This is a serous piece of acrylic. I have drilled for the fan mounts--but still need to cut little recesses for the filters...I also followed the 10 degree bevel at the top and made decorative grooves to follow the grooves on the black plastic bezel.

This should be very interesting to look at when lit. The grooves are more apparent in this shot.

This case is a good excuse to buy a mess of Raptor X HDDs...

I bit more routing and I got the fan filters to recess into the 1/2" acrylic so the SilenX are about 1/8" from the HDDs... I took care to mount the fans so they are not touching anything and still have a little space from the filters to reduce blade noise.

Everything fits and looks good--at this point I have not yet fused the acrylic to the bezel...

Old WaterClocker in the background sitting idle...waiting her turn for a refit.

I had thought about making the face plate fit a standard tray type drive--but as this one is going to be mine I wanted the PLextor in there..
those Plextors are hard to find--Plextor no longer makes consumer drives--only commercial. I would have to pay nearly double now to get another...they list at $180.

There it is--one last inspection and cleaning before gluing it into the frame.

This picture says to me: "CyberD--go get yourself 2 more 74 GB raptors man..."

That is really someting to look at...from an idea to a reality in the space a few hours...I call that a product right there

Excuse me while I wipe the drool off my keyboard...

Here it is permanently bonded to the bezel--it is my new baby...the Naked 900

This lovely glowey board will help me design the rest of the acrylic pieces that I will make from mirror acrylic to hide the PSU cables and so forth. For now she wears the new cooler I just benched...

Although far from current, for my purposes the AA8XE will be perfect--it overclocks like crazy--has RAID for 4 drives and some really nice RAM. It will make a nice update from the slow old Claw that is starting to get a little unstable...

Here is where some RAM with cool readouts or LEDs would be aswesome...I love this front panel window

Going to mess with wiring up the beast to see how she looks alive...

More Soon!

Drill some LED holes on the top and bottom of that acrylics so they face up/down. Turn them on and the entire front should glow. Very Nice!
Once again...
