Need ideas to speed up windows

post #1 of 4

What are some of the things you do to speed up your computer when it gets sluggish?

I've done the following (I may forget and leave some out):
-Clear temp folder.
-Defraged Windows
-Scan for malware
-Scan for old/useless registries.
-Disable some of the visual effects on XP
-Reduce desktop icon level
-Increased a bit of paging files
-Defraged boot up files
-Disabled many startup/service programs
-Disabled System.INI and Win.INI in Msconfig

What else?

1. Kill any services your PC won't be needing/using.

2. A fresh install every 3 to 6 months is never a bad thing.... make backups on a regular basis, and once you get the hang of it, you'll be able to have a clean install on your rig with any/all of the programs & save files you want/need in a matter of a few hours of your time.

3. Go into Add and Remove Programs > Remove Windows Components and get rid of MSN Explorer... It just takes up space (I don't know about resources, but saving space is enough of a reason)

4. Edit your registry to be sure to utilize however much L2 cache your processor provides you. Here's the basic method:

Double-click on the SecondLevelDataCache registry value. Set to the

value of your level 2 cache:

200=512kb

400=1024kb

800=2048kb

1000=4096kb

2000=8192kb

I have the 2MB chace version. What happens if i try to set it as 4MB?! The vaule was 0 when I got there. Also, do I choose Hexadecimal or just Decimal?

Let's see if there's any improvements.

Hexadecimal... And don't set it for more than what your CPU has. You're telling the OS just how much L2 it has to work with. I'd have to say setting it higher than your actual L2 in the CPU would be akin to running out of system memory & going to page file on the HDD, only this is now happening at a lower level of processing.
