I want to buy a PCI slot fan for 8800GTS, recommendations?

Thread Starter
I was looking at this one.

Has anyone tried a PCI slot fan for 8800GTS and did you see any noticeable improvements in temps?

That fan will be perfect as the GTS has one intake and one exhaust that's actually inside the case. The third exhaust is on the exterior toward the back of the case.

You have to find a way to get the air from outside the case, though. Because if the air's warm inside your case, you'll only be blowing warm air straight onto the GPU, which defeats the whole object.

Get one that sucks the air from the heatsink and puts it out of the case

I have seen great results from those

my gts is currently idling at about 55-60 depending on ambient compared to 65-70 before i added a slot fan.

born2killu is right though, you need to get an exhaust fan to fit under the vent strips. the antec that chapstick reccomended is pretty similar to mine (fox-1) but beware - the slots in the gts go about 2 inches down the card and the fan on these blowers is actually placed too far so it only blocks the exhausts.

i cut mine between the pci plate and the fan and stuck it back together so the fan is directly under the slots, and you'll have to do the same.

the alternative is to buy one of the traditional type slot fans (ie non blower style fan) as they are thinner so the air can move into the fan effectively. the downside is that they are kind of annoyingly loud, louder than all my other fans at top speed, so i'd go for a modified blower.

I probably should have gotten one like that, it blows air directly onto your video card and it sucks air out of your computer. I have two of the ones that just suck the air out. It lowered the temp about 2C on the video card (and lowered the ambient in the case by several more degrees).
